First Twins to Represent Australia in Boxing

    - c/o Leader Newspaper

Mooroolbark brothers, Jason and Andrew Moloney, will compete in this year’s Commonwealth Games, becoming the first twins to represent Australia in the sport.

The pair confirmed their spots in the team for the Delhi Games, which will run from from October 3-14, after winning their accepted challenge bouts at the AIS in Canberra last week.

Andrew was 8-0 up on points against rival Dylan Perkins (AIS) when the referee stopped the bout in the second round.
Jason, meanwhile, totally outboxed and outgunned rival Jarrod Woods (WA).

The 12-0 final score showed his superiority.

The Moloneys recently returned from a tournament in Russia where Andrew won two fights and claimed a silver medal, while Jason won two fights and won a bronze.

The brothers capped the trip with a training stint in Cuba.

The twins, who train at the East End Boxing Club in Lilydale, have come a long way since first taking up the sport to improve their fitness while playing football with Croydon in the Eastern Football League.

...pretty sure there's an article on these guys in this months FIST mag as well.

Good stuff. Hope the lads do well.

Maybe they can swap places half way through a fight without anyone noticing. :)

    Was thinking that too.

Often twins consist one right-handed and one left-handed, particularly with identicals. Not sure in the case of these guys whether they are both orthodox or what.

Melbourne twins set on boxing gold
    02 August 2010 | 04:19:35 PM | Source: AAP

Teenage twins Andrew and Jason Moloney only took up boxing to get fitter for footy but now they're eyeing gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

The Melbourne brothers will become only the third set of twins to compete for Australia at the Games after being named on Monday in a 10-man Australian boxing team for Delhi in October.

They'll be following in the footsteps of cricket greats Steve and Mark Waugh (1998) and cyclists Remo and Sal Sansonetti (1977).

And according to their trainer Brian Butler, the 19-year-old pair are genuine medal prospects and can become household names despite only starting boxing five years ago to help them with their fitness for Australian rules football.

"The world is their oyster for these boys, they are model students and for the first time in a long time, I have boxers who I am happy to get up at five in the morning for and go running with them," said Butler, a former professional fighter who trained out of the famous West Ham club in London's East End with the likes of former world super-middleweight champion Nigel Benn in the 1980s.

Jason, who is one minute older than his brother, will fight in the 49-52kg flyweight class, with Andrew competing in the 46-49kg light flyweight division.

The weight difference is a welcome relief to the pair, who like the world heavyweight champion Klitschko brothers, have vowed never to step into the ring together outside of sparring.

"We do spar together regularly and it is fairly intense, but we have always tried to have at least a weight difference between us so we can both have a shot at making the team," Andrew told AAP.

"I am not sure our mum likes us doing it, but her and dad are really happy we have made it to Delhi and will be flying out to watch us fight.

"But we have always said we won't fight for real in the ring."

These days the pair have turned their attentions fully to boxing in a bid to enhance their medal prospects in Delhi and chances of selection for the London Olympics team in 2012.

"I was working as a personal trainer for a year or so," said Jason.

"But we are training twice a day now so I had to give it up, it is very important in a sport like boxing to stay focused and that is what we have been doing."

The pair spend part of the year in Canberra at the Australian Institute of Sport.

In a recent 16-nation event in Russia, that included fighters from England, Cuba, China, both brothers won medals with Andrew picking up a silver and Jason a bronze.

The performances have left Butler, who runs the East End Club in Melbourne, with no doubt they can go better in India.

"They are very exciting and have really had to learn the hard way," Butler told AAP.

"When they first started out Jason lost his first fight and Andy lost his first seven.

"But Andy in particular showed great character to keep battling and he has improved no end and where he is now shows just how much progress he has made.

"They will have a red-hot dip of a chance in India and there is no reason why they can't come home with something."

Aussie boxers to watch in Comm Games

    SMH - AAP -Sept 21st 2010

Australia's boxers to watch at the Commonwealth Games:

    This content is protected
    - The 18-year-old middleweight from Queensland is regarded as Australia's best medal prospect. But he'll likely need to beat India's Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Kumar if he's to win gold. His unorthodox style is sure to cause opponents problems.

    - The welterweight from Moree, NSW, overcame disciplinary issues to return to the AIS with a renewed drive and attitude, according to his coaches. Blessed with quick hands and an exciting style, like fellow indigenous fighter Hooper, a lot is expected of the 20-year-old.

    - The first set of twins to represent Australia in boxing. Light-flyweight Andrew is a minute older than flyweight Jason. The Melbourne pair only took up boxing four years ago and will find it tough against some talented Indian and African fighters but they're known for their never-say-die approach.

Let's hope there's a Commonwealth Games in a few weeks time for these boys to compete in.

    ...and that it's bloody safe!
