There is a list of banned substances that you cannot use.

But then, surely there are a substances that work in similar ways, that are not on the list?
If there's no olympic style blood testing, than anyone can cheat and just stop roiding during the time window at which detection can be made.

    Ok next question:

Quit the nostalgia guys, it's so ****ing obvious that the 60's-90's were extreme PED eras. I think almost all of the greats had PED's of the 'strong' kind.
Why shall we rate them so highly on the ATG rankings? i.e Roy Jones was caught taking steroids...we rate Jones so highly due to his H2H ability in fights, not his generally RUBBISH competition.

Well considering that steroids weren't listed as a controlled substance until 1990, it's kind of pointless to point out boxers before then who may have used them when it wasn't illegal to do so.

Yes, there are always new substances out there that will enhance performance and will have a window before becoming banned. The other problem is that when people say "PED" they usually are talking about hgh or testosterone/steroid type things. If you look into track and field, you will see some cold medicines listed as a PED even though joe public can take them. Then there are other things that are known to boost performance, but are NOT on any list. So again, what's the distinction?

The other thing that most people recognize is the joke that is "testing" done in contests. Those athletes that use them know how long to take their cycles and when to cycle off of them for their scheduled drug test. Now, the loophole for many is to do their cycles and then go to the doctor and get tested when it shows they have a low testosterone level and then get a script for Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Now, they have a "legit" reason for taking the stuff.
