I had a debate with a friend of mines, and I wanna know how true these claims are. So I would like one of the posters in here to provide some proof of it. A friend of mine claims 2 things, 1 of them is that Floyd Mayweather tried to get a fight with Antonio Margarito around the time he moved up to welterweight and marg backed out. He also claims that De Lya Hoya was 15 pds. heavier than Floyd in their fight. I don't know how true these claims are but if it is, I would like someone in here clarify it.
1. I'm not sure. 2. I am still trying to track my taped recording of Money-Fishnets. I think he rehydrated to 163 on Fightnight though.
first 1 is bull**** floyd moved to ww to make the zab fight when judah was still linear champ, not sure bout the 2nd.
I don't know. He knows boxing pretty good but he's bias when it comes to fighters he likes, so I believe that he's only telling half the story about the supose floyd/margarito fight. He said Floyds only purpose was to fight baldomir cause he was the champ(he beat Judah) and by than it was too late for marg to get his shot, since he claimed he already tried, the same way he said shane mosley was ducking him on an HBO telecast.
floyd moved up to ww to fight mitchell when zab was still champ looking to make that fight, hence why it still happened even AFTER zab lost to baldo, after that he went for baldo as he was linear at that time.
I just want somebody to show some proof where he even called out marg at all for a fight. And than the claim about De La Hoya being 15 pds. heavier(which is the only reason he claims Hoya was competitive) is the first I ever heard.
1) False to my knowledge 2) Not sure on this, sounds feasabile that oscar rehydrated after the weigh in to come in about 15 punds heavier than floyd on the night but i could not say with certainty
If it is true, I don't think that had to do anything with him being competitive against Floyd, which is the debate I was having.
Oscar being bigger than Floyd definately had an impact, but then again so did Oscar being so many years removed from his prime. If you wanna shut your friend up tell him that Oscar and Floyd both started their careers in the same division. but Oscar was still much bigger than Floyd on that night.
De La Hoya hasn't allowed himself to be weighed on fight night since the Mosley fight in 2000, so it's unknown how much he was outweighed that night. My guess is roughly a dozen pounds. Mayweather said he was 148 on fight night. Mayweather rarely put on any weight after the weigh-in when he fought at WW (no extra lbs against Judah, 2 lbs. versus Baldomir) Let's say he anywhere from 148 to 151. Say Oscar puts on 6 to 8 pounds, and he's 160-162 on fight night.
Margo and Co. called out Mayweather many times and offered 9 million dollars for the fight Mayweather turned the fight down-Google it.
