Calzaghe is a good fighter, but people on here are over hyping him. He beat past prime Roy Jones! He even got KD by past prime Jones. Prime Jones would have finished him. People are still sleeping on Dawson. Dawson has what it takes to beat Calzaghe. Not saying he would beat Cal, but I give him a 50/50 chance at this point. Dawson beats Jones at this point too.
Jones is just as shot as Tarver mate, moreso in my opinion. Jones - Tarver 4 is the only possible Jones fight that makes any sense, because they are both shot to ****. Anthony Hanshaw landed more punches on Jones than anyone up until Calzaghe (although half the scored Calzaghe punches didn't make direct contact with his face, and that probably goes for Hanshaw as well). That really shows how far he has fallen. Roy isn't going to beat anyone above the B level anymore, and i wouldn't be surprised if he lost to solid B level fighters. Without confidence and work rate Roy is nothing as a fighter. Speed and power is ineffective without the will and aggression to use it. People are acting like this is his first bad performance ever or something, i don't know what people are trying to play at but even before the Calzaghe fight, hell even 3-4 years ago, it was clear he was shot. A shot fighter is someone who consistantly performs on a level a long way below what they once were, it doesn't matter what is the cause (having handspeed and pop doesn't change anything, because his mental issues deny him from using it effectively).
Some very good points here.:good Still, Roy is pretty much shot but not "finished", in the sense that he could still win a couple of fights vs lower level opposition. Calzaghe is still at a pretty good level and an exceptional fighter, plus he has the style (awkward + throws punches in bunches) to make a guy like Jones (can't throw more than 30-35 punches per round + has no reflexes left) look very bad. But imo, Jones should retire right now. There's nothing left to prove, plus he got his last big payday vs Joe. He could still make a lot of money being a commentator or something else (i.e. trainer, promoter) in the boxing business. It was really sad to watch Jones get that kind of a beating, having in mind what he once was. :verysad
Excellent post mate. But imagine if Jones fought Tarver, and Antonio managed to knock him the **** out again. Now, that's something I would HATE to see! Roy please retire!!! :|
He's more faded than shot..he was still in great shape regardless....I HAVE SEEN jOE IN HIA Erlier fights, and he is still fast, but not like back then
Doesn't matter, it counted as a KD. My point though is prime Jones would have finished Cal. Roy doesn't have the killer mentality anymore. He hasn't since getting KO'd to Tarver.
Well I am sure JC could KD roy jones with a forearm smash to his nose it does ****ing matter. Like the gamboa KD mattered that it was an elbow not a punch that knocked him down. Refuse to have a battle of wits with unarmed men.
For a fighter that use to be as great as Roy once was and as physically gifted as he once was even a half step too slow could prove to be fatal. ROY DOES NOT HAVE THE GREAT FOOTWORK HE ONCE HAD THATS THE MOST OBVIOUS THING TO ME..:deal
Roy has no speed or power , he is and was done before fighting Joe.. Roys has never had one punch KO power even in his prime, his KO power came from the speed of his combination punching , velocity and accuracy , 6 years ago ,Roy was so fast, that he could link 4 to 5 power punches in a row then get out the way .. That ability is gone Roy hit joe with power shots that had he been 6 year younger he would have followed up with 4 other power shots in a row. Reflexes Gone - Roy was hit with flush shots he could see coming but was not able to move out of the way of, a sure sign of dulled reflexes 5 to 6 years ago fighter where lucky to hit Jones Flush more then 5 time row during a single round . Stamina Gone . Roy no-longer has the stamina to keep up his high octane offense he was once capable of. Legs Gone .. Gone is the speed foot work that was the key to Roys Offense and Defense working and clicking, he's nolonger able to close the distance to the target or move out of the way of danger. Motivation Gone , what seriously motivated fighter wakes up at 7am to do road work?? Then follows that up with a morning meal of Grits susauges and Eggs??? Anyone looking at Roy's work out session could see it lacked intensity, Roy's workout resemble a retired fighter that just trying to staying in shape rather then fighting for a title. The version of Roy going into this fight was a D- fighter Hopefully Roy gets out before his kids and family see him seriously injured . Pavlic team is more then likely kicking them selves in the Ass right now, If Pavlic had not Fought Hopkins and waited for the out come of Joe Vs Jones , no Doubt the public would have demanded that Joe fight a live body in Pavlic , instead of a dead legend in Roy.
Dawson also has the skills and Dawson has the speed. He would have a speed advantage over Joe and a reach advantage and that's why Joe won't fight him... Oh yeah...he has more power than Joe...Joe slapped Roy 344 times and not once did he even stagger Jones...
I can't argue too much here. Roy isn't anywhere close to what he once was. Joe made him look worse than what he is, and Roy could still beat some second-tier foes, but he's far removed from the greatness he once possessed. True, and a good point. I see you are a wise and reasonable man. Ha ha ha. Just messing. I agree here, as you know. :good This could well be, although you can't discount the abilities of a (admittedly worn) Eubank, Reid or Kessler. I also think Calz cutting down Dawson's punching room might be a factor. I give Chad credit, though. He's young, fast and can throw in combination coming from a larger frame than Calz is used to dealing with. Good point. If Chad committed to the jab that would certainly help his prospects in a fight with an aggressive Calz. Excellent points, man. You really know your stuff. :good:good Two more excellent observations. Joe definitely does drop his hands and he often will square up to his opponent and be in a position to be hit. Sounds like you should be training Dawson for a potential Calzaghe fight. :thumbsup I agree, this would be a good strategy for Dawson to employ should he fight Joe, as well as timing him as Bhop did. Agreed. If Chad could take a step towards one side or the other when Joe rushed in, that would give him increased room to extend his longer arms. That's an excellent point. Agreed on all points. Dawson often holds his hands too low and takes parts of rounds off, which leaves him open to the kinds of charges that Johnson partook in. And Johnson definitley has better power than does Calz, and almost certainly a better chin (though Joe's is very sturdy as well). Of course, Calz is faster than is Johnson. Dawson has filled out well after fighting as low as 158 lbs. in his career. He definitely has a larger frame than does Calzaghe. I don't know if this translates into much more punching power for Dawson but, then again, Calz isn't exactly breaking bricks with his fists, either. I think Joe is growing into the 175 lbs frame. He looked stronger in this fight than he did in the Hopkins one. However, strength edge should go to Dawson, provided he would use that to his advantage (like the elbows/shoulders with Tarver). I agree, I could see this happening as well. I think this might help Dawson rack up points and keep the fight close or even help him pull out a points win. Although, Joe doesn't get knocked down more than once in fights. And once he adjusts to the power of the opponent and makes changes to stay away from getting dropped again, it seems hard to hurt him. Basically, he dials down the recklessness. Lampley, your post was well thought out, very well reasoned and far more balanced than most of my hyperbolic missives tend to be. You state the case well for what could happen in the fight and what each fighter might best try to execute in a potential Dawson-Calzaghe matchup. Great work, and I'm sorry it took me this long to respond. Thanks for writing this and keep up the good work. :goodgood
