2 thoughts after re-watching the Jones-Calzaghe fight

wtf lol, wow, Paul I made a thread the very same day saying that same thing, I watched the fight over 3x's that night, and people were saying I dont know wat im talkin about, I was watching another fight. Gettin all kind of ridicule. Lol, I keep tellin every1 dont ba prisoner of the moment, be4 that cut RJ was very much in that fight. After he got cut he was done, he couldnt see, and I dont think he knew how 2 handle that seeing as how he was never cut be4. But w/e

 

Jones did better than I thought he would. He never gave up, had much better workrate and stamina than I thought he would. I thought he looked way better than he did against Trinidad. He's not what he once was, but he was pretty damn good considering what he was up against because Calzaghe was amazing on Sat. night.

I noticed that Calzaghe was much sharper than the Hopkins fight. He moved better, punched harder and more accurately. Sure Hopkins had something to do with it but I think Calz. was adjusted to the weight with Jones and he look bigger and more solid. He said he trained harder for Jones and I believe it based on his build and performance. I'll go so far as saying Jones may have had a chance against the Calz. that fought Hopkins.

That forearm shot (unintentional) Calzaghe took to his face, bone to bone was pretty wicked. He labored a bit to get up but damn by the end of the round he was backing Jones up. He took some other monster shots (round 6 face melter) and I gotta say he can take it and recover quickly.

I think this fight was less about Roy being shot than Calzaghe being incredible on Sat. night. Credit to both :bbb :bbb :bbb

the fact is he is worse.

Please guys its bad enough the Roy guys have to say their man is a shot duck. but the Calzaghe guys need to just move on.

I prayed Roy would turn up like THE old roy jones but all we got was an OLD roy.

Calzaghe won fair and square and with absolutely no doubt. Dont try and make out like Roy was half the man he used to be.

 

He wasn't. Imo, if Roy would get a "10" when he was at his absolute best, I'd give him a "4" right now.

I agree Jones is not totally shot. He still has a very impressive combo of power and hand speed but I must say after that he doesnt have awhole lot going for him at this stage but still to have the pop and speed he does at 40 is quite impressive. Its very hard to find many guys at that age still as good as he is obviously guys like Archie Moore and Bernard Hopkins are an exeption to that but Jones isnt a bad fighter now. Hes still very good boderline great fighter now he isnt on the elite level anymore though that much is obvious. That said I dont give a **** if he can still fight because he should not continue to fight theres nothing really he can accomplish. Hes already got the 50 wins he could try to win a Cruiserweight title but its very unlikely at this stage he would take to many big shots and get KOed eventually. There will never be a 4th Tarver fight and the Johnson and Calzaghe rematches would be extremly hard to avenge. Noboddy has interest in a Hopkins rematch now and Jones shouldnt go there anyway he should keep the win he already has over BHop. He could challenge for a ABC belt at 168 or 175 but whats the point really ? I hope he retires and continues to live a productive and healthy like if boxing though maybe open his own gym and train fighters or go back to commentating if HBO dont want him back **** them send him to Showtime he could do well there with Al and Steve.

 

I think Roy would have done better, and looked impressive, if he was fighting anyone else, but Calz. was just incredible though. I think Roy was trying to put punches together but he was getting nailed in return, and I forgot to mention Calz. bodywork, it really took it's toll. The second and third time I watched, it Roy seemed to be doing well on the offense for the first couple rounds, but then in round 3 and 4 Calz. just came on like a freakin' demon with a bit of court jester mixed in.
