We Brits are many things, but we are not European in my mind! Carpentier doesn't belong to #3. One of the most overated fighters of all time. Besides, he should have got two more losses, for Gunboat Smith and Ted Lewis fights.
He clearly lost the Gunboat fight on TKO, only saved by his manager, who used his influence to rule it a foul. And in Lewis fight it was an actual foul, hitting on a break. Throw these two "wins" out and he's left with almost nothing.
Excluding the likes of McLarnin, McAuliffe, Dundee, Kaplan, etc. : 1. Jimmy Wilde 2. Jim Driscoll 3. Bob Fitzsimmons 4. Duilio Loi 5. Owen Moran 6. Ted Kid Lewis 7. Ken Buchanan 8. Nino Benvenuti 9. Jackie Kid Berg 10.Freddie Welsh 11.Marcel Cerdan 12.Lennox Lewis 13. Benny Lynch 14. Georges Carpentier 15. Battling Nelson 16. Pete Sanstol 17. Marcel Thil 18. Lou Bogash 19. Salvatore Burruni 20. Sumbu Kalambay Others there abouts: Bruno Arcari Rinty Monaghan Max Schmelling Jim Watt Joe Calzaghe Ricky Hatton Naseem Hamed Lloyd Honeghan Dariusz Michelczewski
Haha, and Moran and Lynch! Don't worry, I couldn't have thought up half the names without your list (and the other half without T's) :good
Excluding active fighters (need a few years' hindsight to judge them properly), I think Ken Buchanan was the best. If not him, then Nino Benvenuti or Ted Kid Lewis.
:thumbsup You´re right, the FW Lynch is definitely a p4p greatest European, his fight with Kane was surely a great fight, which I would like to see... :yep
