On June, 28 later this year, it will be 20 Years since Jeff Fenech's legendary bout against Azumah Nelson in Las Vegas.

As history will record, Nelson won that fight by decision but to this day, the result is still disputed with many ringside and watching the telecast claiming Fenech was robbed.

How did we all see that bout with the benefit of 20 years hindsight?

I think Don King had his hand firmly up the judges arses and Fenech Won. I also believe that Fenech was never the same fighter after being robbed in USA.

Fenech did enough to have got the nod IMO.

'Flash' Malcom, who if I remeber correctly had dealings with Don King and his son Carl, had an interesting take on the result:

The bout was held at a Los Vegas Casino. How many people would have backed the draw??

I must have watched a different fight then?

Anyhow, Fenech was robbed, plain and simple. Never the same fighter after that.

    He was a champion.

Don't forget didn't Nelson's wife die a short time before the fight and did he have an illness leading up to the fight ? Malaria ?

The true Nelson turned up in the rematch and we all know what happened there.

Seen a video from the last coupla years where he briefly mentions the first Nelson fight, he says he's over it and all in the past, but his own worlds betray him and you can tell he still hurts over that decision. I think he's moved on with his life, but i dont think he'll ever fully get over that decision.

The maleria subject came up in a discussion i was having on this fight a few years ago. the response was something like:

"Maleria!?! That wasnt Neslon's problem! Having a goddamn wolverine as his opponent was Nelson's problem!"

I've heard the same thing, dont know if its true, details surrounding the subject seem to be a little sketchy.

I personally think the Malaria story is a load of ****. The NSAC wouldn't let him fight if he was suffering the effects of it. Fenech got the better of him in the first bout. Dave Moretti and Miguel Donate should be sending him apology cards every year for that one. Nelson got the better of Fenech in the return. That's what happens when great fighters meet each other.

Fenech was robbed. I don't think he is over the decision iIm not. I agree with most posts that he was not the same fighter after that bout.

I've seen bigger robberies but Fenech did get the nod in my opinion.

Given the corrupt state of boxing under Don King, Fenech could probably consider himself lucky they didn't give Nelson the win.

I don't think Fenech's self destruction after that fight was down to the result alone, he was partying, not training properly, hand injuries and a had a certain arrogance to his lifestyle. Regardless of that Nelson 1 decision, Fenech most certainly would of finished his career with KO loses at some point.

Does anyone feel if Fenech was given the victory in the 1st Nelson fight that the result in the 2nd would be different??

The only thing that changes in Fenech's career is being a 3 weight division world champ instead of 4

BTW Fenech was one of my favourite fighters so i'm not hating on him for the sake of it.

If the judges awared the fight correctly, there most likely wouldn't have been an immediate rematch. At that point in time they were looking at Fenech as a legitimate opponent for Pernell Whitaker at Lightweight and I'd say that's the direction he might've headed.
