I was there! There was a really nasty atmosphere at White Hart lane and during the build up, what is not often mentioned is after the fight there was various kick offs at ringside which also delayed them getting Watson out of the ring. Michael really was giving Chris a boxing lesson , but how Eubank who was dead on his feet for most of round 11 managed to find the strength for that one punch I will never know. An awful end to a fight that should of gone down as one of the best come back from behind ever. Seeing the various interviews with Michael , how he managed to do the Marathon makes you realise his strength of character, a truly inspirational person who despite what life has thrown at him has been able to turn one huge negative into a positive. Michael Watson is a class guy.
The man is truly amazing, its a shame that our beloved sport attract such idiots at ringisde from time to time. I witnessed similar scenes at Khan V Earl and Hatton V Lazcano. Gladly they are a rarity but it does happen!
What this man has done since that fatefull night will always make me humble. Simply amazing recovery from what was a terrible injury. Man should be knighted.
20 years ago, & I remember it like yesterday! I was 18, & still a boxing fan to this day, thanks to terrestrial TV giving my generation such amazing fights to hook us to the sport for life.
watched all them big fights of that era. remember needing the toilet and missing watson knockout benn. atsch i was only 9 at the time. :yep hated eubank. always wanted to see him get beat. watson was busting him up until that uppercut. :-( hope he gets to carry the torch some of the way next year. :good
so true. tyson fights used to be shown at 9:30 on the sunday morning on itv. those were the days. :bbb
20 years! holy cow... Was in a North London pub full of Arsenal supporters and it was unbelievable the turbo-charged atmosphere, hatred of Eubank, willing and urging of Watson - just unreal The fight itself and climax was spine-tingling, and Monday morning/lunch time EVERYBODY in the cafe, at work, even lady behind the till at petrol station, mentioned Michael Watson being hurt and how boxing should be banned!
Boxing just struggles to capture the nation the way it used to. This fight was massive EVERYBODY talked about it. Now go and ask the lady at the petrol station who Carl Froch is she wouldn't have a clue.
He's a one off. He is the only person known to have made any recovery at all from the type of injury he had!!!
