I think it was one of the worst decades of boxing since the last 12 or so decades. Thank god for the Welter Weight division and some of the other lower weight division that have carried the sport these past ten years. However this is normal, there have been droughts like this in the past. I think the heavyweight division is just about done recouping from the Ali overshadow. The turnout and hype for Haye vs. Harrisson tells me that the sport is ripe for a great heavyweight champion. The fight was terrible, but the hype was there. People are waiting for the next exciting heavyweight, and their standards are starting to ease up. Pacquiao and Mayweather have people paying attention to boxing very closely, making it a great time for a great heavyweight to burst on the scene. Unfortunately that will probably not happen soon, but who knows. I hope this next decade brings us a much better heavyweight divsion What do you guys think about this past decade and how it relates to boxing history?
hail: mutant kelly pavlik This content is protected ' Having looked at the prospects for the heavies coming up, i'm not excited. They all just seem so limited, even a good one like Helenius here.
Boxing doesn't need the HW division to not suck in order to be perfectly OK. That's a myth, and it needs to die already.
What needs to happen is promoting of good boxing regardless of weights. The more people start caring about divisions like BW (oh those little guys!) the better.
:good We could just change the name of Cruiserweight to Maximumweight and make that the ceiling. :think That would drastically reduce the number of crappy fights (and uninspiring title fights specifically). If you can't make it under 200, you don't get to box. The sideshow might be hiring. Best of luck. :deal
This has been the worst heavyweight era ever. Two very effective, very dominant, but very dull champions, then a raft of fat useless sacks of **** below them. And it has been a weak era for young fighters coming through. Most of the biggest fights of the decades have involved fighters who rose to prominence in the 90s (eg Floyd, Oscar, Mosley, Hopkins, RJJ, Barrera, Morales, etc etc). Fighters who were hyped as top prospects were often exposed in big fights as being extremely limited (eg Pavlik, Pascal, Lacy, Taylor, Alexander). The real stars of the 2000s (eg Pacquiao, Mayweather, Winky, B-Hop, Marquez, etc) have provided great exhibitions and great fights, and have achieved some great things, but all in all I have not been impressed by this decade. For me it has been significantly weaker than 1990-1999.
The heavyweight division is overated. It doesn't have to be great just look at the 80's. The best fighters (apart from Tyson, Holmes, and Holyfield) usually were in the lower weight classes and still are as of now. I think the 00's started off great(Barrera-Morales 1, Gatti-Ward 1, DLH-Mosley) but had us making a lot of "What If's" at the end. Had fights like Haye-Klitschko and Mayweather-Pacquiao have happened in that decade then that would've recaptured a lot of attention back to boxing. Farewell '00-'09(well a new decade started in 2010 but still), hopefully this decade will be better.
Haha just goes to show how opinions can be absolutely poles apart - I personally think the 50's was one of the best eras personally!? and I think the 80's gets labelled too much - I yearn for the 80's!!? The Tyson fights were about as electrifying as it gets for me - only thing I imagine coming close would be maybe seeing Jack Dempsey coming to the ring
in a P4P sense, it's not so bad...... Manny Pacquiao Bernard Hopkins Floyd Mayweather Jr Shane Mosley Oscar De la Hoya Juan Manuel Marquez Erik Morales MAB Winky Wright Sergio Martinez Joe Calzaghe Yeah, I know, HW sucks...
it was a very poor decade with overrated bums and a huge amount of tomato cans it reminds me of the 50s and 60s:yep:think
