Back in the day (I *think* it was summer 2002), I bought from a newsstand a boxing magazine with a cover story on the junior welterweight division (they were hyping it as the deepest in boxing) and a feature on an unknown boxer from Youngstown, Kelly Pavlik. Does anyone remember what mag and issue this was? Completely random, but this has been bothering me for years.
The earliest I remember seeing Pavlik getting any type of mention in the mags was like 2004....I can't think of any as far back as 2002
Yeah, it was really early in Pavlik’s career. I vaguely remember him or his trainer talking about how some of the other fighters assumed he would be easy work because he was a quiet white guy (can’t remember if he was talking about in the amateurs or in his first few pro fights). Pretty sure he had hair back then too.
I remember Pavlik with hair. Kinda looked like Joe Smith JR. I really do believe that was 2004. The jr Welters were a bit deep then as well, deeper then they were in 02 for sure. If it's the same issue of ring mag I'm thinking of there were some hypothetical matches they were throwing out there, one being Arturo Gatti vs Ricky Hatton and another being Jeff Lacy vs Jermaine Taylor
I really thought it was from earlier than that (02 or maybe 03) but you might be right. Do you have any idea which magazine it may have been?
Must have been Ring that is what I used to buy.....slight chance it may have been KO, if they were even still around by then. It's a damn shame what happened to KO
