Well what went wrong? He had so much potential and so much of a window ... Did he fight Calzaghe too fast? or was it true since he was in the Olympics that he would have trouble with an in and out fighter? He looked like all he wanted to do is try and knock Calzaghe out ... I wonder what would've happened if he had tried to box or be more patient? Please don't say that he couldn't box, because he could ... he just elected to pressure and try and impose his will on Calzaghe --
You should stop making threads. Please. Lacy couldn't box at an elite level, he was always going to be a pressure fighter. Was limited as a combination puncher overall, due to his handspeed. Was open defensively. Had trouble vs Sheika and Vanderpool. He was never even close to being as good as it gets. In hindsight, he was over rated, due to his exciting style and KO power.
He only lost 1 fight though and is top 5 ranked by the WBA at super middleweight? Lacy can box ... if he couldn't box how could he win a world title? ... he didn't knock everyone out ... and if i'm not mistaken he had never been knocked out himself. Add to that ... You can even dispute the knockdown Calzaghe got - which was really a push. Don't come at me like that ... if you have an opinion write it, but don't make it personal.
What makes him a journeyman? He had a year of inactivity due to the injury/surgery and has fought Manfredo last year ... I don't get how that puts you in the category of a journeyman ... I can see if he lost a title fight but he's still on the comeback trail.
He belived his own press "Left Hook" deployed Lacy. He will defo grab another strap before he decides to call it quit's. I'll not put him in "journeyman" status just yet, not with that type of explosion.
Lacy had 18 or 19 fights before fighting Calzaghe, and the only top guys were Syd Vanderpool and Omar Sheika, both of whom were considerably past their best. Both, however, were outboxing Lacy before his superior strength and power took over. He does now how to box a little, but not enough to compensate for his lack of foot speed or head movement. I'm sure the Calzaghe fight caused some of the problems too. Fernando Vargas & Davey Moore both had more potential than Lacy, but took on too much too soon in the forms of Felix trinidad and Roberto Duran. Both took more punishment in those respective fights than Lacy did against Calzaghe, and they were both ruined by those beatings. The same may be true for Lacy.
honestly i didnt think much of lacy even before he fought calzaghe. lacy can box yes, i just didnt see anythin great out of him and his power wasnt unbelievable or spectacular either.
Calzaghe probably caused a lot of problems. Your not going to be the same after going through that for 12 rounds. David Diaz could have at least been competitive against the top guys at 135lbs, but now, I might not pick him over even just a fringe contender. However, Calzaghe didn't "ruin" him. He showed a good amount of flaws and weaknesses prior to the Calzaghe fight. Calzaghe was just something he had never seen before, and unlike his previous opponents, could expose these flaws and weaknesses quite easily.
He was never a boxer, he was a puncher who pressured his opponents. That is how he won his world title. Being a pressure fighter takes a tonne of skill, i wasn't saying it doesn't. Just saying that your initial post regarding him being able to outbox people is just plain wrong. I came at you personally because it is a silly thread, to say he was as good as it gets. That is just ridiculous, and you are setting yourself up to look stupid saying things like that. He isn't a BAd fighter, just not an elite level one. He could realistically still regain a title, although it won't be against Kessler that is for certain.
