YUCK !! Chris Byrd Hasim Rahman James Toney Lamon Brewster John Ruiz Monte Barrett Calvin Brock Wladimir Klitschko Samuel Peter Nicolay Valuev
A transition year with Lewis and Vitali retiring. By 2008 things were better, and I agree 2004 > 2016. 2008 Ring Magazine ratings. Wladimir Klitschko Vitali Klitschko Ruslan Chagaev Alexander Povetkin Nikolay Valuev Sultan Ibragimov Samuel Peter Oleg Maskaev Juan Carlos Gomez Alexander Dimitrenko
There was some degree of revival by 2008 after several years of basically garbage. Not sure I agree that 2004 was a stronger year than 2016. At least there's some young talent out there now. It would be even better if Fury were still in the game. You've got young undefeated dudes like Joshua, Wilder, Parker, and an aging but very dangerous Ortiz. That's better than an ancient Toney, Rahman, Byrd, Ruiz, Brock, etc..
Parker who might have fought better than Wilder or Joshua stock took a hit in the victory over a 10th ranked Ruiz. Wilder and Joshua aren't selecting top ten title opponents. Not one, and the field is weak. Toney, Brewster, Rahman, Byrd, Peter, Ruiz, Brock, etc.. would be the best they fought. Wilder has been exposed in victory vs top 20-40 ranked guys. Joshua opponents seem overmatched and treat their title shot like paid sparring partners. Ortiz seems to be fading due to age. A pity. And no current champion wants a piece of Povetkin, Pulev, or Haye. Why risk when belt milking is permitted? The USA is so hungry for a champion, Wilder fans don't seem to care about his opponents ranking, and the UK fans are pretty much the same way with Joshua. The talent level low in the top ten and unproven among the champions. Of the current champions, the only one I see that could be a good champion is Joshua.
Wilder and Povetkin were supposed to fight back in July but it got canceled. Joshua took an alpha strap this past year. Wasn't his fault that Charles Martin happened to be the guy holding it. he's been keeping busy, looking impressive and is fighting Wlad in the Spring. The 2004 scene was pretty dire. You had Wlad losing to Brewster. An ancient and blown up James Toney making the top five. John Ruiz who had already been exposed by Jones and others ranked up there. Chris Byrd winning iffy decisions and needless to say some pretty boring snooze fests. I'm not saying that 2016 is "leagues" better than the division of 10-12 years ago, but at least there's some youth and signs of life. The heavyweight division of 2003-2006 was a barren wasteland.
The only one of those three who I'll grant you is a worth threat is Povetkin, and as I mentioned in my last post, he and Wilder were supposed to fight in July. The other two haven't done much in recent years, particularly Haye who has beaten all but 3 opponents in the past 6 years and to my knowledge isn't even ranked anymore unless I'm missing something.
While I think Joshua is the closest thing to a potentially good heavyweight champion how many other active fighters would also be 18-0 vs the same guys?
It's 2005. 2004 2005 Lennox Lewis, Champion Vitali Klitschko Chris Byrd Corrie Sanders Roy Jones Jr. James Toney David Tua John Ruiz Wladimir Klitschko Fres Oquendo Mike Tyson Vitali Klitschko, Champion Chris Byrd John Ruiz Hasim Rahman James Toney Monte Barrett Andrew Golota Fres Oquendo Jameel McCline Corrie Sanders Lamon Brewster
LOL! James "There will never be a white heavyweight champion" Toney. I still don't get how he didn't get more crap for saying something that idiotic.
Joshua is fighting the #1 ranked HW next April. Wilder already beat #2 ranked HW - Stiverne . Vitali never beat anybody ranked that high. Sanders was the highest ranking guy he ever beat and Sanders only had that ranking because the division was at its lowest point in history. Vitali's career is over. Wilders isn't. He has the potential to surpass Vitali as a WBC title holder.
Who's rankings are you using? Wlad hasn't won a fight for nearly two years so he certainly isn't the number 1 HW. Stiverne at number 2 is a joke.
