So Cotto got beat last night..... This has to be the most depressing year of boxing i've experianced in world terms. First Calzaghe slaps his way to a close win over far better technical fighter Bernard Hopkins. Then Nate Campbell out brawls the far classier and exciting Juan Diaz. Then Margarito who lost to Danial SanTOSS, beats the awesome Miguel Cotto. I feel like crying 2008 pound for pound top 3 1) Manny Pacquiao 2) Joe Calzaghe 3) Antonio Margarito How depressing. Please can we have some technically proficient fighters back on top of the game instead of these human windmills. It seems like an age since we were blessed with the likes of Roy Jones, Felix Trinidad, Pernell Whitiker and Terry Norris heading the sport.
I know where you are coming from, but in terms of excitement these three very rarely let you. It isn't that depressing. It could be worse. I mean Samuel Peter could be a world champ........oh ****.
I don't think the judges are helping - it seems that all they look for is aggression and the man in the centre of the ring. God knows how many losses Pernell Whitaker would have copped these days! I couldn't score Calzaghe vs Hopkins, because it was that close in pretty much every round - but Margo put in a sensational performance last night, just taking the best that Cotto had before breaking him.
If it worked for Mr. Greb... :yep I'm not sure I agree with Calzaghe/Campbell though. Hopkins might be a better technical fighter, but hes not really exciting to watch and he cheats an awful lot. That's not good for the game. And Campbell just did everything Diaz does better that night. The guy threw 1200 punches that night, and they were both happy to go to work on the inside. It wasn't like Campbell turned Diaz into a brawler - he likes to fight like that. Nate just beat him at his own game.
You can add Kelly Pavlik into this list. As much as I don't like Taylor, he has more style than slaphead.
I must admit I find Antonio Margarito and Manny a bit one dimensional, but Calzaghe can at least change his game plan as he did in the Kessler fight. He can box beautifully behind the jab when he wants to.
Thats my whole point.... Calzaghe can occasionally box well behind a jab but people like Norris, Jones, Cotto, Whitiker, De la Hoya, hell even Naseem Hamed could do a little bit of everything better then Joe does anything. Don't even get me started on Pacman or Pavlik because they are technically poo .... they mut be doing something right though either that or the games evolving into physical punch fests instead of the class and timing of yesteryear.
very harsh, pavlik is VERY technical, jabs and straight rights galore, and pac has become a superb box fighter, he has a lot of skills that many can only dream of having.
