After Q1 of 2009 in boxing, I'm not sure it will keep up with 08. so far 09 has been a disappointment in providing any really good, competitive fights with exception to JMM vs Juan Diaz. Seeing whats coming up in Q2, the only thing that Im looking forward to is the Pacquiao v Hatton fight. Your thoughts?
i agree. me and my brother was were actually having a chat today about it being a quiet 1st quarter for boxing. it's been relatively quiet so far aside from jmm-diaz.
Loving 2009, Marquez/Diaz, Dunne/Cordoba, Rogan/Skelton the best three fights I've seen so far and still got Froch/Taylor, Hatton/Pacquiao, Haye/Wlad and a **** load of young talent coming through.
Mosley vs Margo. . .Diaz vs Marquez. . .Adameks KO over banks we have Cottos return, Cotto vs Clottey soon . . Williams vs Wright . . PacMan vs Hatton. . Wlad vs Haye . . alot to look forward too oh and Juanma vs Penelosa:deal
Im speaking of competitive fights. Haye/Wlad won't be competitive, and I am not sure Froch/Taylor will be an exciting fight
It's think it's been an okay 1st quater... -Berto was tested by Collazo -Mosley knocked Margarito the **** out...Margarito got caught with wraps and suspended for a year - Darchinyan retained his belts against Arce - Angulo continued to show us what he's about - Martinez made Cintron cry lol! - Campbell lost his belts on the scales - Cotto and Pavlik made there highly anticipated returns to the ring - Marquez and Diaz had a war - Victor Ortiz and James Kirkland continued to KO there opponents - Khan beat barrera on a cut There's probably still a lot that i missed but from what i listed...that's a good amount of **** for only being 3 months into the year. I think Fall will be a lot more better though. We stil have Williams vs Wright, Froch-Taylor, Juanma vs penelosa, pac-hatton, Cotto-clottey and a possible PBF return...2009 isn't so bad.
Actually, I think that is what has given a bigger impression that its been a poor 2009 Q1. It has been stacked with decent cards with potential, but the fights haven't held up to expectations IMO. Many of the fights that on paper looked like they would have been pretty competitive, weren't. - Darchinyan retained his belts against Arce - non competitive - Angulo continued to show us what he's about - non competitive - Martinez made Cintron cry lol! - non competitive - Campbell lost his belts on the scales - no show - Cotto and Pavlik made there highly anticipated returns to the ring - 2 mismatches not even PPV worthy - Marquez and Diaz had a war - great fight we need more like these - Victor Ortiz and James Kirkland continued to KO there opponents - non competitive - Khan beat barrera on a cut - non competitive and disappointing
It's been decent. March to August is usually the quality stretch for boxing...last year during that stretch we had Pac/Marquez II, Izzy/Rafa III, Casa/Kastidis, Steiglitz/Andrade, Cotto/Margo, the tremendous crybaby performance of Kermit Cintron against Margarito. So in other words, you really have to wait til the end of august to judge the bulk of boxing's run.
Compared to 2007 and 2008, 2009 is definitely falling a bit short. At this same exact time last year, we already saw Paul Williams, Juan Diaz, and Andy Lee all losing their 0's in shocking upsets. Not to mention Bunema knocked out Karmazin, Cory Spinks lost to Verno Philips, etc. all happened before April 08 even arrived. Other than Mosley utterly dominating Margarito, we havent had any real suprises this year.
While I agree 2009 is falling short compared to the superb start 2008 had, I don't necessarily mind the lack of upsets. While we all love upsets, I'd like to see some semblance of power being set up. The idea of there being "unbeatable guys" makes upsets all them more spectacular. For instance if Haye manages to beat Wlad or Vitali in 09, it'll have more ooph to it than Bunema knocking out Karmazin or Spinks losing because the Klitschko's have been SO very dominant for so long.
