I really can't tell you how I am voting because I have been Officially named the Boxing Historian of the Boxing Writers Association of America, But I do agree on about 50% of your choices. Here's the letter that went out to all the BWAA members: Joining the process will be Henry Hascup, who serves as the President of the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame and is on the board of directors of Ring 8 among, other things. Henry has graciously offered the BWAA his services as a resource historian, much the way Hank Kaplan did when he helped many writers until his death. Like Kaplan was, Hascup is one of the foremost historians in the world. He also has vast archives that he will share with us for research purposes when we are writing a story, etc. Hascup will be available to help BWAA members throughout the year. He can be reached at This content is protected .
Huh. I actually thought Yuh had gotten in. I figure JCC and Tyson must get in. Their popularity was so immense. Tyson may not be rated close to Chavez in number of achievements but he was easily one of the most popular and/or notorious sports figures on the planet for years. I'd like to say Garcia, with the guys he rumbled with...shame he isn't in already after all this time. Some of these guys I'm just not familiar enough to speak on but it's also surprising to me Zapata isn't in yet. Tszyu was certainly a fine champion, but I feel like he can wait for the likes of Cocoa. KT is not a guy I just assume gets in the first year of his eligibility, no disrespect.
I figure Tyson and JCC are probably locks. Only the top three moderns will be inducted? For who the third modern candidate to be inducted might be, I sneaked a repeat glance at the Ring Magazine BHOF. In the Ring's modern group are three names remaining that are not in the IBHOF: Gus Lesnevich, who is not on the nominee list Henry has provided, Yoshio Shirai and Ceferino Garcia. Of the latter two, Ceferino, with the bolo punch, his MW title winning knockout of long time IBHOFer Apostoli, dominant back to back wins of a then young and now newly minted IBHOFer Lloyd Marshall, and handing Baby Joe Gans two of his four career knockout losses, in addition to several other wins over opponents with impressive winning records, might give Garcia an inside track with the voters, depending on how much weight the Ring listings carry. (Based on the fact that only three modern names there remain excluded from Canastota, I'd say a great deal.) Adding Ceferino would also bolster the stature of Ross and Armstrong even more, if that were at all possible. Cocoa Kid is not to be found in the pages of Fleischer's record books (at least not the 1957 edition), but Tiger Jack Fox is, remarkably enough. (Even Bivins didn't get his record listed by Fleischer.) Jersey Joe Walcott's testimonial concerning Fox may tip the balance in Tiger Jack's favor if it comes down to either of these two as the candidate for the third and final slot. Joey Archer would certainly be the most educational choice for young fans and boxers, somebody who went a long way on the fundamentals of movement and a great jab. An induction might also bring him out of hibernation to attract the curious. However, he doesn't quite have the depth of resume and credentials Betulio Gonzalez and Zapata have. After Tyson and JCC, I suspect that voters might feel compelled to look to the more distant past and a posthumous selection. Ceferino would seem to be the safest, most conservative choice to chose from the 42 return nominees. He may be the most overdue among any of them.
Great thread. I agree with what many on here feel too, Tyson & Chavez are locked. I'm a fan of Tszyu too but to be fair someone like Yuh, Gushiken, Cocoa Kid, etc. should get in before he does. I wouldn't mind for my boy Curry to get in but MANY on that list deserve to get in before he does.
