How is he at 81kg though? The Irish boxer he beat in the junior championship final has moved to 81kg aswell apparently.

I think he looked really good at 75kg, haven't seen him yet at 81kg. He's skilled but I think his physical advantages were a big reason for his success, at 81kg he will be up against bigger, stronger opponents. The Russian 81kg boxer Mekhontsev is down from the 91kg division where he was very successful so I don't know how Hooper would deal with a guy like that...

Yeah Joe Ward, he is unbeaten at 81kg since moving up last year, he is still only 17 yet he has won the Irish nationals at senior level beating Olympic Silver Medalist Kenny Egan along the way and also has won 2 multi-nation tournaments at the weight aswel as the European senior champs a few months ago, hopefully him and Hooper meet again in Baku for a rubber match.

Sounds like the 81kg division could be the one to watch closely :good Your Irish boxers are obviously doing something right, definitely one of the top boxing nations at the moment.

i've got some footage of the some of the oz team sparing some of the vic amateur state title holders last week here in vic at the collingwood gym. i've got 2 rounds of hooper moving around with the victorian heavyweight and 4 rounds of welter weight mark basile sparing dan smith (victorian state champ 08 at light heavy then moved down to middle and won in 09) and michael humphries (2010 under 19 middle weight title). i think it interesting that they both were sparing a weight class above and being put under much pressure. i'll put the footage on youtube and post the link after the tourney - i just dont want to risk upsetting coaches or the like.

oh and hooper is a beast. and maybe a little insane. the vid i have is from the second session last thursday - apparantly on the tuesday, after moving around like he didnt want to be there unleashed and dropped hw with a right hand. he then went and banged out bad rounds, grunting with each punch like sharapova that could be heard half a block down the road
