2016 Río Olympics - North & South American Boxing Qualification Finals

Oh damn, already on - I guess it was 7pm Buenos Aires time (6pm EST)!

 

Personality & skill, and is actually in consistent shape unlike the majority of recent American hopefuls. :nod

The only thing he lacks is HW power, but he doesn't lack it any more than, say, Chris Byrd or Eddie Chambers or Bryant Jennings.

His ceiling honestly could be anywhere in that range.

 

Third & final round of Stevenson vs. Díaz Azocar coming up.

Stevenson dominated R2 and got it 10-8 on all the judges' cards. At this point the Venezuelan needs a KO, but he's mostly running away throwing pot shots with the southpaw jab and occasional arcing lefts falling into clinches.

Shakur is talented, but hopefully when he makes his transition he will outgrow that annoying habit of barking when he punches which seems to be so prevalent among US amateurs of late. :-(

 

He also slaps too much, but again that could be a trapping he sheds when he leaves the amateurs. (often is)

 

Shakur kneels and prays in the corner but he shouldn't have anything to worry about. He should have this in the bag, easily.

I like that aggressive combo Arcón Díaz was hurt by - overhand left while leaning forward and dipping to his right, followed by a right hook on the jaw while straightening up (as the opponent reels from the OHL and pulls straight back)

 

Next up:

David Gauthier (CAN) vs. Luis Cabrera (VEN) - 60kg

 

Round 1

Gauthier is crouching, turned sideways, and shooting out a line drive jab from the chest at the face of his taller opponent. Cabrera spirals his way in close, turning himself away from the jabs while leaned back, and clinches. Reach-in jabs by Cabrera at mid-range. Gauthier trades a few with him, fencing, and then deposits a flush counter right cross. Gauthier crouches outside the pocket, then springs forward to stuff a 1-2 into Cabrera's chin from below, ducking away from Cabrera's response of quick chops with both hands. Another clinch. Gauthier warned for headbutts. Gauthier is warned again moments later, perhaps on the verge of having a point docked. Wasn't intentional, just the way he is pushing up off his toes coming forward as they clinch, while Cabrera slouches down, meeting halfway. Both are warned very sternly for headbutts now as they clinch again.
