    Really excited about this one.

Arcón Díaz eliminated Gary Russell III yesterday in the semifinals (though I thought Russell deserved it), and "Chechen Wolf" Biyarslanov looked beastly dispensing of Carlos Daniel Tobar Romero from Guatemala.

    Round 1

Arcón Díaz is stepping in and out, waving his left glove in short rapid circles, wrist gyrating to distract Biyarslanov. Hard right cross by Arcón Díaz, fading away from the pocket after landing. Biyarslanov can't reach him with headhunting combos, so he begins to sling hard looping shots at his thin core. Arcón Díaz uses movement, adjusting velocity, landing counter jabs and crosses on the face of Biyarslanov. Sideswipes from Biyarslanov while attacking the body hunched forward.

    10-9 Arcón Díaz

The judges have it 10:9 Biyarslanov.

I guess they liked his pressure and body shots over Arcón Díaz's greater activity or cleaner shots connected.

"Canada, watch your head, yeah?" shouts the ref in heavily accented broken English before the bell sounds to start R2.

    Round 2

Multiple warnings from the ref to both combatants for using their head. Incidental, not really the fault of either boxer - just a consequence of Biyarslanov rocketing in with his back arched while Arcón Díaz moves in to intercept upon realizing footwork isn't going to cut it. HARD overhands on the cheek by Biyarslanov, cutting the ring off well, hitting the body on the way in at medium-long range, and then chopping away relentlessly before Arcón Díaz can envelop him in a clinch or build up steam trotting away laterally.

    10-9 Biyarslanov

    19-19

    :blood

Okay, now all three judges gave that one to Arcón Díaz, 10-9. So they have it split, the same as I do, but with a complete 180° methodology.

    Whatever, both fairly close sessions.

This last one, if dominated by either party, will net the gold for them on both mine and the official cards.

    Round 3

Biyarslanov is stomping in and slashing downward across the face of Arcón Díaz with right hooks and drawing the rear hand up cocked and ready as he comes to drop an overhand left when Arcón Díaz tries riding the hooks with a rightward lean. Biyarslanov is spearing the body with hard straight lefts as his fans strike up a chant of "CA-NA-DA!!" while Arcón Díaz flees with his elbows at his sternum, leaving plenty of space to work. A few light counter jabs by Arcón Díaz on the backfoot, and Biyarslanov chases and pounds the body. Arcón Díaz gets enough distance to snap off a counter right hand over the eye, and then another.

    10-9 Biyarslanov

    29-28 Biyarslanov

    Good fight.

Hopefully we get a rematch in Río. (both will be Olympians, as will virtually anyone competing in a gold match)

Forfeiture? Carrillo Palacio no-showed, and so Jonathan Esquivel is awarded third place.

Hollow victory, though, as he doesn't get the satisfaction of actually beating someone in the ring on his way out - and on his way out indeed he is.

In some weight classes, there were four spots available in these qualification tourneys. (meaning the gold and silver medalists, as well as two bronze medalists, get to go to Río) but 81kg isn't among them. Only two spots available, both taken. (by the men about to compete next)
