Showtime! Zappavigna vs. Angulo & Darchinyan vs. Guerrero RBR

Zappavigna vs. Angulo, Rounds 1-3

Battle of the silly hair (Angulo has a nectarine-frosted curl-top, Zappa a footlong rat tail). Angulo clowning and jabbing. Zappa pressuring and throwing punches with some curve on them and some clear power behind them.

 

Round 4

A lot of wrestling, no breaks being called as the ref prefers to have them punch out of it - which they do for the most part, each holding and hitting. Ref warns both for rabbit punches. Angulo steps into a hail-mary 1-2 and lands but is countered. They revert to the pattern of coming together as both land punches, then slapping each other's sides with a free hand as they tie up on the other side. Zappa getting the slight better of the infighting. Zappa cleverly moves his head from aside Angulo's and replaces it momentarily with his fist, then brings his skull back to rest against Angulo's before it can become a target.

Closest round so far, but that makes 4 for Leonardo.

 

Round 5

This started out as equal parts cautious and ugly, but is developing into a good inside war. Both men are strong, and neither is able to carry the other very far across the ring when they tie up before the momentum is turned in the other direction. Zappa keeps his hands up when they separate; Angulo takes on more of a Mayweather/Toney stance. Angulo jams his gloves in Zappa's armpits to stem the offensive flow and Zappa, upper arms pinned, slaps short arm punches at the only available target - Angulo's kidneys. Angulo landing his jab fairly regularly on the outside. Lands a big left hook as Zappa tries to roll into a counter.

Maybe Angulo's first round.

 

Round 6

Angulo swinging in rhythmic pairs now, and landing well around Zappa's guard. Zappa missing several countering opportunities. Angulo is still successful with the jab, either breaking through Zappa's guard or rocking it; this is a punch Zappa is barely using. Zappa tries to time Angulo with a jab coming in, and Angulo moves his head and stuffs a right hand in Zappa's face.

Clear Angulo round. 4-2 Zappa.

 

Round 7

Angulo throwing his weight behind right hands, getting far off balance but Zappa triggershy and not taking advantage. Angulo lands an uppercut on the inside but there isn't a lot behind it. He's going more for volume and accruing points now, while Zappa is still trying to catch something huge. More pinning of the arms and free hand punching from both. Pace slow. Arms weary. Big 1-2 from Angulo falls short. He goes back to the rhythmic nunchuck punching and falls into another clinch.

Angulo not terribly accurate or effective but did press the action, as opposed to Zappa who merely got pushed around.

Round 8

Angulo moving his upper body to that same rhythm he was throwing nunchucks with, he's slipping a lot of Zappa's straight punches but a lot of it is luck (and the fact that he's landing his own wild overhands). Zappa cut pretty badly. Pause in the action. "Let 'em go!"

Zappa grips Angulo's left arm tightly in the crook of his elbow and bangs away at him. This pisses Angulo off and he starts going absolutely bat****, throwing fast hard punches that are wild but landing. Zappa squirting blood all over both their chests, his face painted the same shade as the Tecate logo. The heads are coming together when they clinch, and that could be aggravating it.

Even after 8. Zappa showing heart in battling through this. Bad cut.

 

Round 9

Angulo comes out with a jab, acting the role of boxer. Zappa grabs his arm, and Angulo hits on the break - ref takes a point without any specific warning directed at him that I recall (there were some general warnings to both for holding and hitting, accidental butts, and rabbit punching). Angulo unfazed, chases Zappa with a right hand which tips Zappa's head back but is shrugged/shaken off. Zappa's face a mess again halfway into the round. He gets backed into a corner, pushes Angulo off with a flurry, Angulo tries a right/hook combination off the back foot but mistimes and swipes air as Zappa remains in the corner not following. Zappa landing to the head whenever Angulo comes in with uppercuts but not keeping him at bay.

Angulo may have just taken the lead.

 

Round 10

They trade jabs, each more cautious now than in the first round. Zappa tries a rapid fire combination of straight punches and Angulo simply wraps his arms around him - another clinch. They punch together, and clinch. Angulo falls short with a 1-2, they clinch. Zappa hits behind the head and ref doesn't see it (or just doesn't comment). Good hammers to the body from Zappa during a clinch. Ref says "no kidneys!" and separates them. Double jab/right hand combination stuns Zappa. Angulo goes wild on him, Zappa leans into him and they clinch. Zappa lands a very nice hook stepping outside Angulo's lead foot toward the bell but not enough in a round he lost.

Angulo up 2 rounds.
