The 'no hoper' James 'Buster' Douglas beats the 'Indestructable' Mike Tyson. The biggest ever upset ?
Maybe Yes.......nobody expected that from a fighter like Douglas..... What do you think about....That Douglas could beat anyone.........OR..........That Tyson could be beaten by anyone good.......?????
A few people that Tyson beat would've also upset him that night, including Peak Tucker & Peak Ruddock.
Add Old Berbick to that list, despite Tyson obliterating Prime Berbick in '86 (8 months after Trevor's most impressive performance against Thomas), the 35 year old Berbick in 1990 was kicking his ass in sparring, repeatedly tagging him as he headhunted with singular bombs & struggled badly with balance & timing. Green McCall & Past-Prime Page were greatly troubling him too!
Bro, Tyson when he was on form basically shred through his sparring partners and thats why they got paid the way they did. Because they were on the receiving end of beat downs day in and day out.
I know that. The point is, Tyson was not on form here. Physically, Mentally & Technically he was not there.
I take nothing away from Douglas & give him the credit such a victory merits. He fought the best fight he ever fought, he was never as good before or after that night. He was, to some degree, inspired by the death of his Mother, which took place in the weeks leading up to the fight. However, Tyson DID NOT prepare accordingly, as he had done for previous defenses of his title. Mike has admitted several times that the bulk of his training for that one consisted of Japanese Women! Tyson shows an enormous amount of Heart & grit in this fight, he takes a beating & a half, yet still keeps coming. Even in the tenth round, he took shot after shot before succumbing to the onslaught! And the fact he managed to KD Douglas in the eighth when Mike was by that stage, spent, shows he had a Champion's mentality! The Rematch is the one that got away from Tyson. Take nothing away from Douglas. He fought the fight of his life & even he had been in the same condition for his the defense against Holyfied, I highly doubt he would have performed to the level he did against Tyson. Every time Feb 10th comes around, Douglas, surely must cast his mind back to the day he won the richest prize in sport! He Won the Lottery!
Tyson was too immature, he let himself get distracted and somehow he loved the distractions and the drama. Its a convenient and arguably the most popular excuse for Tysons loss to Douglas, but we all know its true. Douglas, while a good fighter, shouldn't even have been in there with Mike.

Tyson found himself in the worst kind of fight that night not to prepare for properly. A motivated decent boxer puncher.
What i don't understand is why he didn't just throw all he had at Douglas from the opening bell?! There was no raging fury, no vicous intent, he just sluggishly trudged forward with no fire in his eyes, his guard down & waited in range as a stationary target, only lauching his sporadic singular headhunting bombs after Douglas had released his sharp one-twos & combinations.
Tyson kind of looked like that in his comeback too. Maybe he didnt give a ****, like he didnt in his comeback.
Yes, I think his extremely high pain resistance, durability & chin, meant that he wasn't feeling the pain one might expect, as Douglas, Holyfield & Lewis hit him with everything & the kitchen sink. So he thought... i can just keeping absorbing their best, all i have to do it land one huge "Hail Mary". Eventually though, his poor conditioning let him down & he was simply too exhausted to continue.
