HBO. My first live Tyson fight. 12 years old. Cried all night. The biggest upset in sports history is old enough to drink!
Kalasinn...have you ever read THE LAST GREAT FIGHT by Joe Layden? Excellent read even though it's depressing reliving this moment.
I think Rooney is seriously underestimating what Douglas (and Bruno, actually) did and overstating things with Tyson. Very understandable, personal connection, but still. Douglas did not come out in that first round, throw a 'few jabs' around and fight scared. He started very quick, very intense and jabbing stiiff and consistant. He didn't let Mike get into gear, not just merely surviving in there for a few rounds until he 'got brave'.
Didn't let Mike get into gear? He didn't bring any gears that night, except for "lethargic sloth gear". As i said previously here: Against Holyfield, at least Tyson came to take his head-off, ferocious for the first 5 rounds (throwing considerably more than his disgracefully pitiful output in Tokyo) before gassing from poor conditioning, then getting a great second wind in the 10th (very few men except the bullet-proof Holy would've survived the nuclear onslaught for the first 2.30mins of the 10th). Again, he was sloppy in his attack, with ragged defence, but at least he fought "tooth & nail", whereas against Buster, Tyson was sluggish & sleepwalking, except in the 8th where he badly hurt & floored him for 13 seconds (a knockout, if it wasn't for the highly incompetent ref). I'm not convinced Douglas would've lasted 5 rounds with the angry Tyson that Holy beat.
No, i haven't got round to buying it yet, but i will. However, i know what you mean by it will be sad to relive such a depressing moment. The only one of Tyson's losses which doesn't sadden me to watch is the first Holyfield fight, & i refuse to ever watch the D.Williams or McBride fights ever again.
i can honestly say i wasnt all that shocked when it happened the warning signs were there against bruno after he got rid of rooney and bill cayton and surrounded himself with yes men he lost his focus and forgot the things that made him what he was in the ist place .
Douglas was intense from the opening bell, but you could count on both hands how many power shots he threw in the first round. He didnt really start going into after the first round. What Rooney said has some validity. I think Douglas best shot in the first round was on the break a good half way through the round. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTQ7CsEK5DY[/ame]
Douglas not bombing like the second coming of Hagler-Hearns in round 1 hardly makes Rooney some soothsayer, he was still aggressive with his jabbing and intent as said and brought the heavy lumber into play as early as the 2nd and 3rd. Tyson won the 1st round against Holyfield, would anyone be crazy enough to say that he had a terrified Holyfield on the back foot until he allowed him to get brave? Or would that just be seen as self-serving hand waving from the faithful?
Agreed. The subpar Tyson couldn't get anything going because Douglas kept shifting. A mediocre challenger would have gotten caught. But Douglas was great that morning.
