    Interesting notes...

Abner Mares was roomates with Yohnny Perez in the amateurs and Mares came out on top in two of the three matches they faced off in. Mares' father also helped guide the career of Perez and helped him make a name for himself in the US.

Angulo in Mares' corner. Some guy I recognize but can't put my finger on in Perez's.

The only notable judge is Marty Denkin.

Ref is Wayne Hedgepeth. Who? Don't look at me.

Do you think that his parents misspelled Johnny?

    Round 1

Mares with a jab to the body. Perez isn't discouraging Mares walking in. Perez guarding up, trying to time something to get Mares' attention. Perez walking Mares down but not throwing. Perez begins to move his hands but misses, not much steam behind anything yet. Mares hooks with a hooker. Mares tries to circle and jab but Perez picking off. Mares punches under the elbows of Perez. Mares still keeping his jab straight and sharp, but still hitting the side of Perez's gloves for the most part. Perez still not getting anything too solid off. Perez finally shows his own jab and lands a couple but Mares immediately responds with a combination. They fire right hands that sizzle by each other and both land.

    Nice round, Mares 10-9

The parents of Jhonny Gonzalez sure did. I'm not sure how drunk you have to be to mix up the letters J and Y.

Great 1st round this is gonna be a war,Mares is clearly quicker than Parez at this point of the fight, but Parez looks a bit tight, lets see what happens when he loosens up a bit.

    Round 2

Mares bouncing on his toes, circling to the left, and firing 1-2 and 1-2-3 combos. Perez turtling and trying to flurry when Mares steps forward but mostly getting outlanded. Perez the aggressor but not doing anything effective yet. Perez steps forward with a hookercut and Mares simply backsteps it. Perez steps in with a right hand, that works a little better as it grazes Mares. Mares tries to fire a four punch combination and Perez just fires a straight shot down the middle of it. Perez bends his knees and steps into a hook that lands. Mares gets his back to the ropes and fires sweeping rights to keep Perez off him. Perez trying to reach Mares with his long arms without coming in with his feet.

    Closer round, but 20-18 Mares.
