This young technician turned many heads when he put on a clinic against heavily favored puncher and fellow unbeaten prospect Chris Avalos in the main event on ShoBox: The New Generation. Prior to Avalos, his resume was considered thin for a twenty fight veteran. He did, however, already have a solid win over another previously undefeated power hitter in Eduardo Arcos (whose only other loss since then was a game rage against the dying of a light, against a very fearsome-looking Puerto Rican named Carlos Ivan Velasquez in a thriller on Telefutura's Solo Boxeo). Steve Farhood correctly described him as a "cutie" (no homo - although Farhood did on the same broadcast remark that Lateef Kayode may be Nigerian but "is built like a Greek god" :err). Martin is a very slick operator, able to put together stinging offensive maneuvers off the strength of his waist-up defense, which brings to mind a much lighter (in both skin tone and mass) James Toney. He clearly isn't a knockout artist stylistically, but can certainly crack hard enough to earn a slugger's respect; it may be that his low KO ratio is the misleading product of having matched with a number of sturdy opponents. Both Avalos and Arcos support this theory, although it's difficult to gauge whether it holds true with his earlier conquests. It will be very interesting to see how Martin fares when he meets someone else who is technically sound as he is, and not just a come-forward type. We could be seeing the quiet development of a future champion. Super bantamweight is ripe for the picking, or at least very close to it. *Not to be confused with Christopher "Play" Martin, of the famed but badly dated comedy duo "Kid 'N' Play". He could have helped eschew obfuscation by not having the word "kid" as part of his ring name, but whatever...
Somebody off Boxing radio predicted this fight perfectly, they said that this kid Christopher was going to put on a clinic. Good Stuff, cant wait to watch it.
Chris Martin really put himself on the map with that schooling last night. That was a beautiful performance.
