Ive never boxed before and im in okish shape. Im considering joining a boxing gym towards the end of the year. I will also be starting uni. I was just wondering, say i started training in November, how many years do you think it would take me to compete in around 25 amateur fights?

You live in the UK I take it? It depends. In the US depending on where you live you can do it in 18 months to 2 years; depending on how often you fight and how you do at tournaments.

Depends on how soon your coach thinks you are ready to start competing. So kids are thrown in there after one month in the gym, others train for a good 8-9 months before having a bout. It also depends on how many events there are in your area and if it's easy of difficult to get you matched with someone. There's really no way to tell, but I'd say somewhere around 3 years.

Why 25? And why start competing amatuers so soon?
If you never boxed before you have no idea what your getting yourself in to. It's quite different getting hit first off. Then, your so tense, and try so hard you lose your wind in no time.
As for once you start....That really depends on you, and how well you can take punches, and maybe losses starting out. I don't take defeat to well at anything I care about. I have a friend on the other hand who DOES NOT CARE! He'll fight toughmans without training much, he'll wrestle guys that do judo whenever there WAY bigger than him (he doesn't do judo BTW). He simply does not care. If your like that then it won't take anytime to have 25 amatuer fights, but you'll be losing quite a few.

Getting matches and getting santioned matches are 2 different things. As stated, it really depends on location, plus your club. Some clubs aren't as progressive to seek santioned bouts. These tend to be the clubs more into fitness and less on producing quality fighters. Other clubs like where I am at now are focused on a lot of sparring and promoting fighters. Thing is though, even then...by location I have a hell of a time getting santioned matches. I usually have to travel quite a ways. And sometimes(actually often) I get there there and my guy backs out. It can be very frustrating.

I get plenty of fights and experience, but is hard to get them carded.

Honestly though, not sure why you are looking so far ahead. I see too many people doing this. Wanting to train for 6 months or a year before joining a club. Wondering all these various things. If you want to box, just get your ass to a gym and it will sort itself out.
