This powerful Mexican featherweight and native of La Colonia (the Colony, which is the same poor barrio in Oxnard, CA that produced Fernando Vargas and Brandon Rios, as well as Mikey's brother and fellow power puncher Roberto "La Amenaza" Garcia) has been making waves with his devastating right hand, deceptive combination hand speed, and ability to string together long on-target barrages when he has someone hurt without losing his control and composure.

At 22 years old he is still at a point in his career where he can test himself against a slowly improving class and still safely work on smoothing out some of his defensive liabilities and offensive habits borne of over-confidence (something that his now-peaking peers Yuriorkis Gamboa and Juan Manuel Lopez were arguably unable to do before crossing over into stardom).

Here he systematically breaks down Boricua slickster Lucian Gonzalez back in 2009:
    [yt]ZMEZ2R-osO4[/yt]
    [yt]g-qtWXnR8g4[/yt]
    [yt]WVSUpzszNYY[/yt]

He blew out the rugged Tomas Villa in one round (one minute actually) - which had never been done before:
    [yt]H-8KECSbZOU[/yt]
(KO highlights in the first twenty seconds)

He also stopped Cornelius Lock late in a gritty war:

What does everyone make of Mikey's potential?

I think Mikey will be a future elite fighter. Right know i would pick him over most contenders, however i think they are othe right track and should wait about at least a year before taking on the Gamboas,Lopezs,Johns and Marquezs. He looks to have the talent to possibly beat those guys one day.

Its getting harder to remember these up and comers. Ive been trying to keep an eye on Frankie Gomez, Mikey Garcia, Brandion Rios, Carlos Molina, Ronnie Rios but its hard to remember whos who. I could have sworn I saw Brandon Rios fight a while back and I though he looked like ****. Maybe I confused him with Ronnie Rios. Anyways Mikey looks promising.

Im hoping Carlos Molina is the real deal. Hes from my hometown ROSEMEAD,CA!!! Same with Walter Sarnoi (Monterey Park next door) who is also a hot prospect. Frankie Gomez(from same gym i trained at as a youngster).

Yey the last guy we had from Rosemead was former Contender Rudy Zavala(who i went to high school with RIP). Seems like you are familiar with the LA prospects where did you see them at? The Nokia?

What do you think about Frankie Gomez? Another really good local fighter whos been inactive is 2008 Olympian Javier Molina, i think hes related to Carlos. I know they hang out together both were robbed at gunpoint a few months back.

Yeah I usually go to LA 2 times a year. This year I went to the Vasquez/Marquez fight I got to meet Perez and Mares and I also met Frankie Gomez at a JMM presser hes a quiet dude with a vicious style, reminds me of Cotto. Im gonna eventually go to one of those NokiaClub events as soon as they put up a good card. I live and train in the San Francisco Bay area but boxing is not as big as in LA.

He sure looks to be a future champion. I was glad he went 11 rds. in his last fight. He kept his composure when he was unable to get Lock out of there in the early going.

THere is actually less fight cards now compared to the 90s, when there were still weekly shows at the Forum,Pond,Olympic,Quiet Cannon etc etc.

I am planning on going to more shows next year. As the Nokia seems to be a regular spot and Staples,Home depot a few times a year, along with the Ontario Civic center.

huh? Who's making fun of Garcia? I dont think ive ever seen that on ESB... he dont get much attention as others here, but thats alright.

Maybe the point of this thread is that he's flying under the ESB radar? Well, at least on TV he's been a human highlight film, and thats what counts more...
Stepped up a little in his last fight, he needs to step it up more and go against a B-class fighter. His timing and power is very very deceptive....

here's some proof of Mikey love! poste in "who's best prospects in boxing" about a week ago...
Mike Jones under them.... he's a bit over-rated and over-exposed imo. His one fight was rather unimpressive

Id say Alvarez is already a legit contender, especially if he gets by Baldomir on Saturday.

I hear Rodrigo Garicia is the real deal. What about Erislandy Lara,Jose Benavides,Frankie Gomez,Frankie Gavin,James Degale,Shawn Estrada,Demetruis Andrade?

I saw Gary Russell recently he looked impressive, also saw him in the olympics.

umm, Lara and the rest of the Cuban contingent are inherently upper prospects imo.... Those were the top ones imo, not saying there arent any other good prospects... Benavides and Andrade looking strong
