Can anyone provide an update on his condition?

He was still a very well-regarded and rated contender when he suffered a horrifying brain injury during a 10-round win over Luis Melendez almost a year ago now. He barely avoided needing to be induced into a coma, and actually made quicker progress in recovering than expected by medical professionals but still had to take months to rehabilitate muscle function and undergo several surgeries.

I remember when he first emerged from "critical condition" and was able to speak, he initially resisted the idea of retirement although his loved ones and most of the boxing community were understandably adamant that he not consider a return to the ring. At the time he left it as a "maybe". It has in the several months since been widely reported that he is retired. However, none of these sources ever cite him specifically saying so himself. Did he ever actually hold a press conference in the Philippines or make any other sort of formal announcement, or is everyone just operating under the assumption that he wouldn't put his family and fans through that?

Would he even be able to get clearance if he did want to go through with a comeback? What exactly is the nature of his current prognosis?

He was a good fighter, and on the one hand it's a shame he never got to wear a world championship belt with his talent. On the other hand it would be an even bigger shame for him to become yet another statistic in lacing them up one time too many after being fortunate enough to live on borrowed time.

I highly doubt he'll go back to boxing. Last I heard, Manny Pacquiao set up a foundation for him and went as far as donating a million dollars to help out Z. That's as far as I know.

Donaire also visited him while he was in Cebu Doctors Hospital and offered help financially.

    Did he really?

You got a source for that please? I know Pac set up a foundation along with a funding event that raised several thousand dollars but didn't know about the million dollar donation. Thats amazing especially since some of his critics here were accusing him of not doing anything for his countryman.

As for the update, last I saw him was in an interview like 2-3 months back with him walking. Still slow, but it sounds like he will make a full recovery in due time. Amazing considering how close he was to the brink of death.

As far as i know pac gave a lifetime support for him adding the other helps he recieved from different people and organizations.

Its kinda sad how someone could be a champion but it all ended in a tragedic way.

I sure hope that support was really offered, it was really tragic what happened to Gorres.

Gerry Peñalosa has a fight this Sunday here in our city. I read somewhere that some of the money he's making from this fight will go to Z Gorres. Am not sure yet if I can go watch the fight but if my sked permit me, will go and ask gerry about Z.

I always liked Gorres, pity what happened to him, just for the record, I thought Montiel was a little fortunate to get the decision over him.

I certainly hope that he will stay retired but that he gets healthy again and gets to live his life without any sequels. Nobody knows how he's doing?

yea, i'd also like to see the source. I'm sure he had some sort of insurance, the fight was in Vegas. Maybe he wanted to give the Gorres family more money than they could've ever dreamed. Possibly. Above and beyond the call if true.

There was a good article a few months back detailing how the WBO had helped him financially & brought him a TV and **** like that which was nice to see
