Love this fight! Well, everybody does. What´s the most interesting IMO is how both fighters switched their styles with each other during the bout.
I wonder who else knows that this fight was close to happening in 1979? If it had taken place as early as then, Hearns would have been at a disadvantage!
You're right. Hearns - Weston from '79 was posted the other day in another thread. Tommy improved dramatically from then until '81.
Clip 5 shows the judges scorecards. Note how far Tommy was ahead after 11 rounds. Getting close to Leonard needing the stoppage.
Jeezus ****, 29 years ago most of the bitches yer snagged had serious jungle bush This is the fight too how Leonard has always had my 100%+ prop's:yep A truly incredible championship performence in how to rip victory from the jaws of certain defeat:deal This content is protected Uploaded with ImageShack.us
1981 Chicago pay-per-view TV ad voiceover¨(with split-screen footage of both fighters in training): "Sugar Ray Leonard! Thomas Hearns! Who will win boxing's biggest fight?" (Both fighters stop and snort to the camera): "I WILL!" Amazing night for boxing. Perhaps Sugar Ray Leonard's finest performance. A true battle for the ages. The first of several heartbreaking, yet legend-building, world-stage defeats for Hearns. Leonard proved that night --pretty-boy hype be damned!-- he is an all-time great.
The two fight series of "Leonard-Hearns" is on my list of ATG fights I like to review... WORD! MR.BILL
It's funny, seemed like there was a devine presence 'round some guys; like a scenario that they'd always dramatically rally back 'n win, like Louis, SRR, Ali, Jones, 'n SRL.
Yeah, but I never thought of Tommy as the loser in that fight. Great effort. Easy for me to say though, I was rooting for Leonard ;-). Gotta love Tommy though. He sent guys out on their shield and on a few occasions went out on his shield. You always got your money's worth and more with Tommy.
Classic battle between two great fighters. Leonard in his prime, and Hearns just approaching his. It's a pity that their '89 rematch did n't happen 7 years earlier.
