Roman Gonzalez vs. Manuel Vargas RBR

Both in the ring now.

Round 1

Gonzalez comes forward and jabs into Vargas' chest. Vargas tries a few hooks to the body. Gonzalez reaches with a right hand to the head. Vargas is crouching and trying to flash his hands out. Gonzalez double jabs while circling quickly to his left. Gonzalez is pressing Vargas back, almost to the ropes. Big flurry by Gonzalez. Vargas is covering up and trying to wait for Gonzalez to finish before unloading his own bombs. Gonzalez swats him back with a big left hook. Gonzalez just looks stronger and is walking Vargas all around the ring. Jabs from Vargas. Gonzalez double hooks to the body. Hook to the shoulder by Gonzalez. Vargas claps down with some hammer fists. Gonzalez narrowly misses a lead right shot straight up the middle. They come together in a fierce exchange, with Gonzalez driving Vargas back with hard body shots.

Round 2

Gonzalez comes forward and sends several hooking shots at Vargas, high with the left and low with the right. Vargas clubs away underhanded to try and drive Gonzalez back and gain some purchase from against the ropes. Gonzalez keeps knocking him back into them, with volley after volley. Vargas fights his way out to the Tecate logo, and tries to intercept Gonzalez with left hooks to the body. Gonzalez is landing double hooks to the face and rights to the chest coming forward with his head moving and shoulders rolling in the pocket. Gonzalez is just picking Vargas apart at close range. HARD uppercut to the ribs by Gonzalez. Vargas is again on the ropes fighting back and getting outpunched. Big right hand from Gonzalez, partially blocked. A left hook from Gonzalez is just pushed out at about half-force and rubs against Vargas' lip, over his lazy low guard. Vargas tries stepping forward with a big uppercut and gets countered. Gonzalez puts one combination after another together, mixing uppercuts with double hooks and short taps to the body as he blasts his way inside.

Round 3

Gonzalez is lining up his 1-2 and menacing Vargas with it, moving swiftly around him and landing his pesky straight shots two to four at a time. Vargas is again pushed to the ropes despite trying to hold his ground with hard punches flung out of his tightened guard, and is getting tattooed. Vargas is taking some big hits very well. Gonzalez might be a little punched out. Vargas sets up shop on the inside and lobs a right to the body. Gonzalez backs off. Vargas comes forward swinging wildly overhead and trying to rain down on Gonzalez with clubbing blows. Gonzalez again fights him to the ropes and works the body a bit, then takes another break. Vargas ROCKED by a left hook to the face.

Closer round, but still a shutout. 30-27 RG

 

Round 4

Gonzalez feints with his right hand and backs Vargas up. Double left hook by Gonzalez leaping forward, and Vargas backs away from it to avoid damage. Vargas keeps coming forward to meet Gonzalez and then changing his mind and doubling back. Gonzalez pecks his way in with his jab. Pendulous body shots by Gonzalez. Vargas throws almost nothing. Quick jab by Vargas, now. Gonzalez circles and throws jabs and lead rights alternately, still looking a bit winded. Vargas digs a hard right to the belly, and then misses with a wild overhead left hook. Vargas tries double jabbing and gets countered hard in the face with a right hand. Gonzalez is coming forward waving his gloves, halfway between feints and arm punches...just intended to back Vargas up into range for his right hand. Gonzalez lands a right. Both men trade toe to toe. Good action. Gonzalez lands sharper, especially to the body but has a little steam taken off from the earlier rounds and Vargas is coming on a bit.

 

Round 5

Back and forth, these guys aren't taking a backward step. It's definitely tightening up. Gonzalez can't seem to hurt Vargas, but is definitely throwing everything and the kitchen sink at him. Gonzalez turns to defense and starts sliding diagonally back and off to his left and slipping punches. Vargas is just flicking his arms out in Gonzalez's direction without any real technique but trying like hell to just touch him where he can. Hard hooks to the body now by Vargas! He came to fight. Gonzalez is trying to take the round off and Vargas is all up in his face. Gonzalez blocks and rolls his head inside, then gets a few counter combos going with lots of left hooks up high and uppercuts to the body but can't slow Vargas down. Vargas just keeps punching right through everything. He's a machine.

49-46 Gonzalez

 

Round 6

Gonzalez is putting everything he has into uppercuts coming forward, and sticking his jab up in Vargas' face. Vargas is gliding forward on his lead foot, stepping just inside Gonzalez's with it and launching chopping combos up at Chocolatito's face. Gonzalez is backing up and trying to counter and is landing lots of jabs in the face of Vargas. The challenger keeps coming and hooking at Gonzalez's face. Vargas is marked up, may have a cut on his cheek just below his left eye. Gonzalez keeps blocking what he can (although there are just too many punches from Vargas to block it all) and snapping out jabs. Gonzalez landing at a very high percentage but is getting dragged into a brawl. Lots of crisp jabs and short right hands hitting Vargas in the face but not discouraging him at all. He keeps warring with Gonzalez. Holy **** this is good stuff. Both guys tiring but still throwing hard.

Round 7

Gonzalez comes forward and lands a few hooks, and then eats a few as he backs off to allow Vargas off the ropes. Vargas is hooking to the body and getting backed off with big combos from Gonzalez. Vargas hooks his way in with curving lefts and rights, mean intentions on all. Gonzalez knocks him back with short straight counters. Vargas keeps looping bombs at him, his wingspan wide and low. Gonzalez pounds him into the ropes with many short blows. Vargas is hooking hard and getting elbow blocked now. His face is a mess. Gonzalez lands an uppercut on the inside. Every time Gonzalez starts letting his hands go he gets his head rocked by a stray Vargas punch, but he's landing as well. Gonzalez starts to shy away from exchanges and take steps back to line up his 1-2 from outside.
