# 1 Sonny Liston KO 4 # 16 Hasim Rahman - When a reporter asked what liston thought of rahman being able to bench press 500lb, listons reply was "Does the barbell hit him back??". During the instructions both men stared into eachothers faces with a cold stare of hate. But when the Bell rang, the only one who had hate was Liston. He hammered Rahman for 5 rounds. The first 3 rounds he spent patiently stocking his opponent outjabbing him and bloodying rahmans mouth, landing the occasional hard body **** that made rahman wilt. Rahman finally got through with a right hand in the 3rd round that froze liston in his tracks, but he failed to follow up with any succesive blows and liston took the big shot without any noticable effect. In the fifth round, Liston opened up on rahman trapping him in the corner and hammering away at his body and head with 10 consecutive clubs..rahman fell to the canvas wincing in pain. Rahman got up on his feet but a powerful short 1-2 from liston dropped rahman flat on his face out cold. The experts who were at ringside for this one picked Liston as an early favorite to win this tournament after watching him. Interviewing Liston after the fight he claimed "I don't care who they put in front of me, they are going to regret getting in the ring with me."

# 9 James Corbett W Split Decision # 8 Jack Sharkey- In a very strategical match, James Corbett won a razor thing decision over the Boston Gob here last night. The decision brought many boos from the crowd as most thought Sharkey had done enough to win. Most ringsiders scorecards favored Sharkey as well, and the Boston Gob was bitterly dissapointed with the decision. This writer felt it was a draw. Sharkey landed the more effective punches throwing punches in bunches and landing most of the power shots...however it was corbett who controlled the fight from start to finish, winning ring generalship always making sharkey fight his fight. Corbett was very effective with his left jab the whole fight closing sharkeys eye by round 6. Corbett circled all around sharkey for 15 rounds sticking and moving. he must have run 20 miles last night. Corbett outboxed sharkey early on, and we saw sharkey switch to a more offensive role and he outfought corbett in close, but corbett still managed to push sharkey away in the clinches and pop him with straight shots....Sharkey almost floored corbett with a big left hook to the liver in round 10. When the scorecards were announced 146-139 Sharkey 144-142 Corbett 143-143 Corbett, there were boos. No one was more dissapointed than Sharkey "I just can't believe I lost. I won the fight. I won the fight." Corbett said afterward "The decision was correct. I landed all the clean shots. I can't wait to meet this guy Liston. He aint never faced a boxer like me before, I am going to box circles around him." "Many of the old timer fans are happy that old timers Peter Jackson and Corbett made it out of the first round. "It makes a Great Story" one of them said.

# 5 Sam Langford W Majority Decision # 12 Eddie Machen- 4 Late knockdowns by 5'6 Boston Tar Baby saved from getting upset by the very talented Eddie Machen here last night. Experts were dumbfounded by the boxing clinic he put on langford early on, and were ready to proclaim machen the Dark Horse candinate for this years tournament. Right from the opening bell 5'6 Langford tried to get inside on machen, but machen jabbed countered blocked everything sammy threw, and machen went to work on the offensive side as well drilling the much smaller sam with hard left hooks and fast straight rights. It was truelly bizarre to see this caliber a fighter of Langford getting outclassed. Machen with his half a foot height advantage kept langford at bay most of the fight, so sam began to use his ring intelligence and start breaking down machens body starting in round 7. By round 13, machen was well ahead on the cards and needed to just stay on his feet. The scorecards read 127-121 Machen, and 126-122 127-122 both for Machen. He had fought the perfect fight. But now sams body attack was getting to machen for the preceding rounds. Sensing desperation, langford went after it. His body attack softed eddie up, and he finally got in range and crashed a left hook to machens head flooring him for 7. When machen got up sam swarmed all over him putting him down again. Going into round 15 machens corner said "STAY AWAY FROM HIM!" it didnt do no good, sam trapped eddie on the ropes and eddie attempt to trade with the little man. big mistake, sam floored eddie with a huge right uppercut left hook and with 10 seconds to go sam once again floored eddie to one knee. The bell rang, and eddies corner picked him up holding him up high as if they were trying to forget what happened in the last 2 rounds. The decision were announced 141-141 even 142-141 and 142-141 Langford! The two 10-7 rounds won langford the fight. If we went on a round by round basis, machen was the clear winner. Langford said after "It was in my plan all along. I attacked the body because the belly aint got eyes." Eddie Machen said afterward "I fought the wrong type of fight late. I should have stuck to my boxing, he can't handle my boxing game. I still thought I won the fight, he won 2 rounds out of 15."

# 13 Buster Douglas TKO 11 # 4 Harry Wills: In one of the biggest upsets of the First round, # 4 seeded Harry Wills was upset here last night by James Buster Douglas. A huge win for Douglas, who showed he was one of the most highly skilled superheavyweights of the tournament. This was a highly competitive match between two 6'4 talented fighters, but douglas proved himself superior. Douglas scored the first knockdown of the fight in round 3, but a sharp right uppercut from wills in round 5 floored douglas for 7. Douglas came back though and confused wills by switching up to southpaw on him, continueing to smack jabs in his face and beating him to the punch with straight long shots. Wills coming back to his corner in round 10 said "They told me this boy is seeded 13th, he sure dont fight like it". The end came in the 11th when douglas floored wills two more times, and a glassy eyed harry after getting to his feet stumbled into the ref's arms. It was a HUGE upset and douglas corner went crazy. scoring at the time favored Douglas on all 3 cards. Experts at ringside are quick to pick the talented 6'4 230lb douglas as a wildcard now to make the sweet 16, as his next opponent stands 5'6 sam langford. Douglas said " It was a great fight, Wills is a great fighter and showed me alot of things in this fight. I want this badly." Wills, wishing his good friend sam langford the best of luck, said "Ill get my chance someday" and walked away, his head down.

# 3 Joe Frazier W Unanimous Decision # 14 Razor Ruddock- In a roughhouse battle here last night, Frazier outworked Razor Ruddock for the Unanimous Decision. Frazier saw himself down on the canvas twice early in the 3rd round both times from huge ruddock left uppercuts, and one more knockdown sure would have stopped it...but Frazier with his warrior's heart picked himself up and kept on plugging. Ruddock still ahead on the cards after 7, then faltered. It could have been because he got tired, or it could have been Frazier's body attack which was melting him down, but joe frazier got smokin and really piled on the pressure and punchrate in rounds 8-12 taking the fight to ruddock and landing lots of attrition. Frazier landed the big left hook a couple times, but ruddock took it very well. In the last couple rounds Frazier got busier and busier piling on the points while ruddock looked like he was just trying to survive. He had used up all his knockout punches on Joe and spent the latter rounds clinching trying to catch his breath. At the final bell, Frazier won the well deserved Unanimous decision. 146-141 146-141 and 145-142 all for Joe Frazier. Frazier said after "I was fine, I knew where I was. I knew I was gonna get to him eventually. They say I got this guy Archie Moore next. No way an Old Man beats me." Ruddock dissapointed said afterward "I didnt feel right after round 6, I think I got poisoned before the fight. All mi energy and strength was goone. Frazier woulda been knocked out odaawise."

# 6 Archie Moore KO 12 # 11 Sam McVea: What a turn of events this fight turned out to be. Archie found himself in a world of trouble early on, but his ring Savvy allowed him to survive and he slowly picked apart Sam Mcvea before knocking McVea out in the 12th round. In Rounds 1 and 2, Archie found himself on the canvas courtesty of huge left hooks and right hands from McVea. The Ole Mongoose held on though and pulled out every old school trick in the book to survive. By the 4th round though, Archie cleared his head and began taking over. for the next 8 rounds, Archie outsmarted and outboxed the chizzled 215lb foe who scared experts at ringside with his intimidation alone. Archie picked out all of McVeas weaknesses and coutered his big blows with fast straight pinpoint accurate shots that grinded down Sam. The knockout blow came in the 12th when Archie made Mcvea miss with a huge right and he countered with a fast dead on Straight right hand which made McVeas whole body wiggle down to the toes. Archie then reponded with two more left hooks to the head and a final right uppercut and McVea dropped to his knees then on to his stomach and the Ref counted him out. McVea said after "I have never been knocked out before, that Mongoose is soo clever." Archie who prefight called McVea "nothing but a big old scary looking punching bag" said "That boy sure can whack, hes one tough cookie. That Frazier boy, he got alot of heart but once Ruddock hits him hes gonna go down and out." Experts were in high praise of Moore and thought he may have what it takes to upset a high seed and make the Sweet 16.

# 10 Vitali Klitscko TKO 11 # 7 Joe Jeanette- 6'7 vs 5'10, Fans came to the fight just to watch the fighters stand next to one another. Vitali towered over Jeanette. Jeanette appeared very confident though, undanted by Vitali's ridiculous staredown in the center of the ring. When the fight got started though, Jeanette had alot of trouble with the height and reach. Vitali continued to lean back making jeanette miss and count with long lead right hands. The fight was somewhat boring. Neither fighter did much, and Jeanette suprisingly took vitali's best punches without faltering. Jeanette won his first and only round in the 5th by landing some nice ones on vitalis body and from the clinch landing a solid right uppercut that backed vitali up. Vitali's jab gashed open a cut under jeanettes eye in round 7, and from there jeanette just hung on. experts were impressed on how Vitali showed he was a very effective attrition puncher wearing jeanette down slowly and effectivly until the 11th when after flooring jeanette with a right hand, then right uppercut, vitali landed a long 1-2 that backed jeanette on the ropes out on his feet..before vitali could follow up The Referee stopped the fight. Jeanette said afterward "He a good fighter and real tall, but he dont hit all that hard. johnson will beat ep the big fella bad."

# 2 Larry Holmes W Majority Decision # 15 Greg Page- The most talked about match in the first round by experts. This match failed to dissapoint as it was an extremley well fought close match until the final bell. Greg Page, as predicted showed up motivated and in shape and gave us a great show. Holmes who knew page wanted this badly, showed up in great shape too and proved he was the better fighter here last night. There was alot of prefight talk and Holmes, who page dubbed "Sissy" for refusing to fight him, proved to the world that he was not afraid of greg page once he got in the ring. The fight started off hotly contested as Holmes tested page with his trademark jab and page circled around the ring with smooth movement and footwork of a ballerina snapping in a few shots here and there. The fight picked up in round 4 when Holmes landed the first big punch of the fight a fast 1-2 which jolted pages head back and holmes attacked throwing blistering fast shots, but page weathered the storm and delivered a couple punishing blows himself. Though not overally dominated, holmes took the first 4 rounds on all 3 judges cards. But now this is where Page found his mark. His right hand started landing, and it started landing consistently timing it right after holmes brought his left jab back. In round 7, a CRASHING RIGHT HAND CATCHES HOLMES ON THE EAR DROPPING LARRY ONTO HIS BUTT! Larry gets up at 8 groggy, but his amazing recup powers allow him to survive the rest of the round...As page tries to finish holmes off on the ropes, holmes fires back some fast straight shots of his own showing his mean side. Now its anybodys fight! In the championship rounds, Holmes heart takes over. He outslugs page in the trenches, and wins the jabbing match. though page consistently lands his right hand throughout the fight. In the 13th round after connecting with a double jab, a straight right catches and off balance Page down on one knee for a quick 2 count. Page gets up fine and goes back to work. but its holmes now in control he dictates the fight. the last round both men slugging it out leaving there hearts in the ring, both trade big blows until it looks like one of them is gonna drop. DING DING! FIGHT OVER! 143-143 EVEN 143-140 and 145-141 for Larry Holmes. Larry Holmes said after "that boy page came to fight, but he still aint half the fighter I am. No one is going to beat me". Page said afterward "Larry aint all that great, I thought I won the fight, I landed all the hard blows." With Larry looking at 6'7 250lb Vitali Klitschko next round, he looks like he will be in for quite the barnburner schedule.

# 1 Muhammad Ali TKO 9 # 16 Jimmy Bivins- The prefight was one sided. Ali talked and talked and talked some more and bivins kept silent, trying to save it for the ring. Ali dubbed Bivins "Tree" because he was short, but had ridiculously long arms growing out of his side like branches. Ali said "I hope I dont get tangled up in dose". The fight started and Ali looked fabulous last night moving as gracefully as ever popping bivins with lightning like strikes. Bivins very intelligent tried to confuse and throw ali off, but Ali was in his groove and never stopped. Bivins could never figure Ali out and the only thing that was working for him was his long 80" jab. Bivins attempted a more aggresive approach and this turned out worse for bivins and ali pitter pattered bivins with sharp blows and gave him more of a shellacking. Twice in round 7 bivins when down from double lead rights, Alis specialty. In round 9 Bivins went down once more from a lightning flurry before Bivins corner threw in the Towel. Ali said afterward "I think all his leaves fell off the branches. Im fast and Im pretty and he Ugly thats why he dint win." When asked who would win between johannson and young Ali replied "joh what? how do you pronounce his name? Do they even have boxing in Swedat...swedill...however you pronounce where hes from. Hes a bum, the swede well drop in 3 and then well deport him." "Young, well hes a good fighter. A smart fighter. So it wont be easy, but I except these right here(fists) will be too fast for him".

#8 Ingemar Johannson TKO 4 #9 Jimmy Young- In a sensational ending, Ingemar Johannson after losing the first 3 rounds, landed his Bingo and knocked out Jimmy Young, the 210lb slickster out of Philly. Even though Young and his camp knew about the Hammer of Thor, Ingemar's element of suprise still caught up to young. He trapped young, allowing him to build a early lead outboxing him while ingo circled using his jab early. He waited until young felt comfortable enough to get in range then BOOM! Young went down flat on his back then got up at 9 out of his feet...the referee allowed the fight to continue but one more right uppercut and volley of blows sent young right to his back slamming his head down hard! The referee waved off the fight immediately. Muhammad Ali ringside for the bout said "No way he catches that kidie paw on me". Ingo replied by saying "That kids got a big mouth and this(right hand) is gonna shut it." Young was very dissapointed. He said "I thought I had what it takes to make it far, I can't believe I got caught. Sometimes the best man doesnt always win.

# 5 Max Schmeling W Majority Decision # 12 Clarence Henry - Henry told reporters before the match this one would come down to the final round. He fights like he preaches. Entering the final round the scorecards read 133-133 133-133 and 134-132 Henry. Throughout the fight it was max schmeling and his sharp counterpunching vs the aggresive henry landing with his quick hooks and busy bodywork. The experts were suprised with the talent level in this fight compared to the recent one they saw of carnera-jeffries, and gave each fighter a high grade after it was over. Entering the 12th it was dead even, the man who wanted it more was the winner. Henry came out trying to force the issue unleashed long fast combinations but schmeling leaned back and countered with short accurate hooks to henrys head that at landed and froze henry. Henry worked his jab trying to score as much points as possible, but schmeling timed it and landed a couple more hard rights. the last 30 seconds henry backed schmeling in the ropes and threw everything he had left to the head and body but most of those blows were blocked by schmeling. when the bell sounded, schmelings intelligence won him the round and the fight. The hardest punch of the fight came in round 8 when a henry left hook nearly floored max buckling his legs from under him. Henry showed a good set of whiskers in this fight. Schmeling said of watching jeffries vs carnera "I cee sumeteen". Henry thought he won the fight, but accepted schmeling as a class opponent. "I hope he tears the big guys apart" he said of schmeling.

# 4 James Jeffries TKO 10 # 13 Primo Carnera: An extremley one sided boring fight. The experts were suprised that both of these fighters were in a prestigious tournament like this, and when I reminded them one of them was a 4 seed, they shook there head and walked away. This whole fight was fought in the clinch. there was mauling, butting, shoving, wrestling. not much boxing. The boxing we did was effective body blows and uppercuts by Jeff. Primo seemed to want to muscle jeff around more than stay at distance and use his long jab to affectiveness. When Primo did throw his left jab, it landed. but he was far too inactive with it. In round 10 Jeff finally found the mark with left hook that sent carnera toppling...carnera then proceeded to get floored 6 more times each time getting up and showing the ref he was ok. After the seventh time, the ref had enough and waved it off. Carnera said afterward "I cant wait to go back to my home in Italy, I have big plans." Jeffries called Carnera a "Big Oaf" who made him look bad. When asked if he was concerned about schmeling, Jeffries replied "If I was concerned about a fighter, than why would I be fighting in this tournament? whats with these stupid questions! Get outta my dressing room!".

# 3 Lennox Lewis KO 1 # 14 Fred Fulton- The most one sided fight of the tournament. Both fighters 6'5, this was the battle of the giants. But this battle didn't last long. 1:30 into the first round, Lennox connected with a big right hand, and a short left hook followed it dumped fulton flat on his stomach. Fulton tried to get up, but his legs were gone. After the fight, Lennox not even sweating said " I hear this Jackson fella is pretty pretty tough, I watched him fight the other day and he has some nice skills. I am looking forward to a great fight."

# 6 Peter Jackson W Unanimous Decision # 11 Jerry Quarry- A very intersting fight indeed. Jackson proved himself the more clever boxer and he outwitted Quarry to earn the justified decision. Jackson showed tremendous stamina in this fight keeping up and outworking quarry every step of the way. Quarry scored most of his effective shots to the body, while Jackson really drilled some nice left jabs and lead rights to quarrys head. The best round was Round 4, when both fighters visited the canvas...After flooring jackson with a uppercut to the chin and left to the body, Jackson got up and came back and with a quick flurry droped jerry on his ass for a quick 2 count. In round 6 a right from jackson opened a massive cut under quarrys right eye threating to stop the fight for the next 9 rounds. In the late rounds, the fight moved to close quarters but jackson showed tremendous strength inside and landed some nice uppercuts as quarry tried to turn the fight in his favor. At the final bell Jackson offered Quarrys hand in congratulations to a well fought match, quarry matched it and smiled. Scorecards 146-139 Jackson 144-137 Jackson and 146-138 Jackson. A bloody Quarry said afterward "Jackson is a class act, I wish him the best of luck. A good fighter." Jackson had little to say about his next opponent other than "the bigger they are, the harder they fall."

# 7 Tim Witherspoon TKO 9 # 10 Zora Folley- The Elegant Modernized Boxing Skills of Zora Folley vs the old school turtle shell counterpuncher Tim Witherspoon. Two Fantastic boxers a # 7 and # 10 seed met up that had the experts split between who would win. Witherspoon promised before the fight he would Knock Folley out, while Folley said "Ive seen this guy fight, and Im on a different level." The fights starts of hot the first couple rounds, and zora gets the better of it, smashing his jab into witherspoons face until his nose starts bleeding. Folley remains active breaking through spoons gaurd and landing the cleaner faster blows as witherspoon trying to land his big right continues to come up short as folleys high gaurd blocks it with efficiency. Folley staggered spoon in round 4 with a sharp 1-2 that nearly floored spoon. Going into round 6 Zora is in comman but this is when the tide turns. Witherspoon countering finally gets in a big counter right uppercut and folley's vunerable chin is exposed fully, folley takes the punch but is badly hurt and falls back to the ropes and covers up. Folley is never the same in this fight again, and witherspoon in the 7th and 8th rounds lands some monsterous shots on the groggy folley who somehow manages to stay up. Folley spends most of the time covering up on the ropes and spoon drills hard shots into him. When the Bell ends round 8, Folley is practically out on his feet. His corner has seen enough, there not allowing Folley to go out for the 9th round! Folley protests vigorously but his corner remains firm. Witherspoon wins it! Scoring at time of stoppage 76-72 Folley 77-75 Witherspoon 77-75 witherspoon. Folley seemed to be doing very well until his jaw let him down. He won the boxing match, but ultimatley lost the war. Folley said after "He caught me with a good one and I never recovered. but im still the better boxer. That kid has no shot against tyson."

# 2 Mike Tyson KO 1 # 7 Michael Moorer- Experts commented Moorer walked into this fight looking like a scared jackrabbit. Tyson didnt cease to impress his fans, late in the first round After slipping a moorer right hook, Tyson unleashed a devastating 6 punch combination to the head and body started by a left to the body and finishing with a and the final left hook to the head knocked moorer on his back flat cold. It took 20 minutes to revive moorer from canvas scaring everyone in the stadium. Tim Witherspoon, tysons next opponent witnessing the massacre said "Im not scared. If you stand up to a bully, hell quit." Tyson tried to walk over to witherspoon but Kevin Rooney held him back and him and Jimmy Johnson took him to the locker room. Kevin Rooney walked by the cameraman and said "whos next in line?"

Neither did I mcgrain, but if anyone can stop McVea, its the All time Knockout king archie moore. moore was arguebably both the greatest all around puncher of all time and greatest finisher, as well as near the top of the list in one punch knockout power.

 

I felt bad about Wills. I defend him over dempsey all the time resume and accomplishments wise. He had a bad draw though. Put wills in against anyone else and he goes far in this tournament. Wills is good enough to make the elite 8, but some fighters get bad draws. I really like Harry Wills, alot better than buster douglas. dont make me feel any worse than I already do. Remember this is march maddness and i have to pick upsets. douglas at his best can upset harry wills, thats reality.

Ingo actually has Ali next round LOL

 

O dont worry, I am not done on dumping on Ingo yet. I will never be convinced he can stand up to a slugger like cleveland williams, after the hurting brian london put on him.

 

Tell you the truth old fogster I almost had it Wills beating douglas and machen upsetting langford. then it would have been Wills vs Machen in the quarterfinals. Interesting indeed. I even almost had ruddock knocking out frazier. but there would have been too many protests. I need to have low seeds knock off high seeds, so things will keep interesting. if its the same top guys everytime, things get boring.
