I think there are some refs who would have stopped it. Thank god they weren't there. It would have been premature, obviously. I was a critic of Smoger at one time, because I felt he let some fights go too long, but I thought he did an excellent job that night. I hope they have him again.
Uh, I think you're missing the whole point. Taylor had bored the whole boxing world to sleep. HBO was done with him. People weren't interested in his fights anymore, at least not nearly as interested as they were in Pavlik. He's going to make them much more money than Taylor ever did. That's why HBO was not going to let Pavlik lose on a 2nd round tko.
LOL HBO had nothing to do with Taylor's inability to get Pavlik out of there. He had plenty of time, but couldn't close the show. Blame Taylor.
His point is that the judges had JT grossly ahead on the cards. So, if HBO had devisedd this scam, they sure as hell did a poor job.
Smoger is the best ref in the business. He allows the fighters to fight and allows the knockouts to occur! Theres nothing worse than a ***** ref depriving us of action and a highlight reel KO.
I'm not naive, it's just that you've got a case of mistaken identity. Jermain was HBO's golden boy, and that wouldn't have changed unless Pavlik knocked him out. Kelly wasn't going to win a decision- all JT had to do was avoid the knockout. He couldn't, and now you see Pavlik getting the attention. Pavlik wasn't "chosen" until after he KO'd Jermain.
Hey, I could be wrong, but I think it's pretty obvious that Pavlik had been tapped by HBO after the Miranda fight to take over the middleweight division. You don't think that Taylor knew that HBO and boxing were bored with his fights and that he needed to step up if he wanted to remain the cash cow? Of course he did. But HBO stands to make much, much more money with Pavlik as champ. If the fight had been stopped in the 2nd round, HBO would have lost a fortune in future revenue.
HBO would have gained revenue because their well-known fighter scored an exciting TKO/KO, which would build his reputation enormously- especially against a tough guy like Pavlik. Taylor was also on his way to a decision. If HBO had wanted to influence the outcome of the fight, then they would have gotten to the judges to make sure Taylor lost. It wasn't in their plan to have Taylor suddenly knock Pavlik down, make sure the judge didn't stop it, then they somehow prevented Taylor from finishing him off.. It just doesn't make sense and this conspiracy is officially busted.
I'm not saying the fight was rigged, not at all, only that Pavlik would get the benefit of the doubt when it came to the fight being stopped, because Taylor's drawing power was done as far as HBO was concerned. But, whatever, agree to disagree. Let's see what happens with the next fight.
Shut up with the stupid ass conspiracy theories. Both fighters went down one got up the other couldnt!
It's not a conspiracy theory, moron. It's business. Boxing is about money. atsch Again, agree to disagree.
