If it's another ref . . . we could only guess if the fight could have been stopped. But Smogger did the right thing by not stopping it. That was a title fight and Pav was shaken but not totally hurt. It could have been a controversial stoppage if it was stopped.
no, he was fighting back and not laying on the ropes helpless. no reason to stop it, although a biased ref like cortez might have.
Something that occured to me is that Smoger was never out of position. When Kelly was hurt he kept a very close eye on things. Pavlik fought back, and clinched appropriately. By the end of the round it was Taylor initiating the clinches. In contrast, when Smoger could see that the ropes, the ring post, and Pavlik punching the **** out of a defenseless JT, were the only things holding Taylor up, he stopped the fight. Smoger did a great job. Boo
Smoger is one of the best referees in the business. There was no need to stop the fight sooner. It's impossible to speculate whether or not another referee would have stopped the fight in teh second round after the first knockdown. It would be just as easy to calculate when the Fan Man would make a return the ring. There is no way of knowing the truth. And for anyone suggesting that the fight was fixed in Pavlik's favor because he was the new face of HBO boxing - you should go back and rewatch his fight with Edison Miranda. HBO produced a long five to ten minute promo piece on Miranda and his background. Then Kelly Pavlik walked to the ring and they told you his name. That's not exactly how one promotes it's new face of boxing. Jermain Taylor was the network's fighter and chosen champion. Pavlik had to knock him out to beat him.
All I have to say is thank god for Smoger, he obviously did the right thing. My crystal ball sees very controversial stoppages in the future with Pavlik (if Smoger is ref). Pav fans will say "look back at round 2 of the Taylor fight"
In hindsight Smoger clearly did the right thing in not stopping the fight but it wouldn't have been outrageous if he had. Hitman_Hatton made the point if it had been a brit ref he may well have stopped the fight in the 2nd. I could quite easily see that happening.
You are exactly right about HBO building up Miranda with that report on his miserable up bringing & dissing Pavlik with no up close & personel interview. Miranda's got some nice muscles from eating so much road kill. Maybe more fighters should go that route. But like Kelly said after the fight, Miranda was hyped by the media & KP proved them all wrong. Fight of the Year...KP vs Miranda or KP vs Taylor. I don't care, take your pick. And if Kelly doesn't get Fighter of the Year, what a discredit that will be after 3, count them... This content is protected dominating performances in 2007.
if you watch the replay of the fight.... pavlik got up IMMEDIATELY after he got knocked out.... like the ref didnt even get to count to 3 before he got off the canvas
his win over Taylor was impressive but hardly dominating. Getting a KO after being down on the scorecards and 1 hair away from being KO'd yourself.
Would have been stopped and given to the guiy that was getting beat if it had been the ref for the SRR v Turpin rematch
