I tend to agree, yes he was hurt by the shots but he wasn't seeing stars and hadn't been knocked down and you could argue that Matthews had been equally rocked by his own shots. I always think the fighters reaction tells a lot of the story, if they look gutted but hug the ref then they knew it was on the cards, corolla looked bewildered
And angry. It wasn't like degale stopping smith when he was angry but it was after dozens of unanswered shots, the fight was pretty even.

You cease to be champion while the bout is contested, you effectively become a challenger again. It should have no bearing on whether the referee stops the fight or not.

Agree with this but I think the point is in a Championship fight you should be given more opportunity.

Shocking stoppage! an absolute joke. Take nothing away from Derry though he was in great shape and fought to a good plan. John Keane was to blame for stopping such a great fight.

    Revenge on Saturday! Team Crolla!

That isn't what the post I replied to said. Being champion gives you no special rights. I think he'd been given the benefits of the doubt already.

In my opinion, unless someone has lost every round on the card or has been totally dominated and can't win the fight anyway, a stoppage should only take place if a fighter is either unable to defend themselves intelligently or has taken so much punishment that they have become a danger to themselves.

A referee doesn't have the right in my eyes to decide that someone who can still slip and block and shots and is in with a chance of winning the fight can just be stopped without being in danger. The Katsidis/Marquez fight is a good example, Katsidis has Marquez down and was in the fight until the last couple of rounds when he was taking big shots and unanswered punishment. The ref jumped in when he was still standing with his guard up but it was a great stoppage because Kats was going to get more of the same. Crolla on the other hand could easily have won that fight.

a lot of crolla fans on here, but in all honesty from an unbiased point of view (as a fan i wanted the action to continue) crolla was getting hurt and i felt, from a neutral pov, that he was on the way to getting stopped and getting hurt every time a decent shot landed, did crolla say much about the stoppage being too early? Mathews was going to win that fight imo and was hurting Crolla, stoppage was on the early side but not terrible

I'm not even a Crolla fan I just think he deserved the right to continue, Matthews was landing hurtful shots but looked tired and the round was almost up. He could have gone to the corner, taken advice and got on his bike to see out the fight with a W. Maybe he would have been stopped in the next round but at least it would be a proper stoppage rather than the ref making a call, which is essentially what it was.

Obv he is in the ring and we're not but as many times as I watch it I still can't make it right. Referees have a tough one though, they're responsible for a fighters health and life, not like in football or any other sport where it's usually the outcome of the match that is at stake, so we can't be too harsh on them. For all we know Crolla could have been rendered unconscious in the final stages of the round, although it didn't look like it on TV.

Crolla would have stopped Derry within the next 2 rounds, he was nackered, wincing after every body shot.

For me, you have to rip the belt from the champion. Not stop him on his feet with 3 seconds to go in the round with his head totally clear. THATS ROBBERY!

Honestly some people are full of ****!

you have some sort of connection to crolla but putting that aside i doubt crolla would have come back to stop mathews at that point, not saying it couldnt have happened, but for me and a lot of people the tide had turned in derry's favour, crolla was looking hurt and imo was on the way to a stoppage loss at some point in the fight. It is not a rule that you have to rip the belt from the champ, the belt is vacated effectively at the start of the contest, the champ gets no special favours as the champion is decided at the end of the contest. And the ref is not a timekeeper, Taylor was stopped against Chavez irregardless of time left in the round, time is not a factor, it takes 1 second for a punch to land that can do damage.

the stoppage was perhaps a bit early, but it was not a terrible stoppage, we see far worse fairly regularly

Its amusing to hear posters on here saying things like "He was fine", "He wasn't even seeing stars", "His head was totally clear"....how the **** could you possibly know how he felt?

Coz i know him you tit, i spoke to him after the fight, and have spoke about it many times since. At the time he was stopped he was totally fine.

He was also ahead on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage. i think 1 had it level, 2 had it in crollas favour if i remember rightly.
