3 great fighters. 3 great fights. You choose- MAYWEATHER, CALZAGHE, PRYOR

What do Floyd Mayweather, Joe Calzaghe and Aaron Pryor have in common?

Whether you agree with it or not, all three guys are sometimes criticized for their resumes. And all three guys had great talent.

So, I submit 3 fights that could've happened in an ideal world if money/politics/etc hadn't mattered:

FLOYD MAYWEATHER v KOSTYA TSZYU in 2004
    At the time...

Kostya Tszyu was #3 pound-for-pound, and had knocked out Zab Judah and Sharmba Mitchell in recent fights.

Mayweather was in between fighting DeMarcus Corley and Henry Bruseles, two of his less glamorous opponents. Was hurt in the Corley fight, one of the only times we ever saw PBF in trouble.

JOE CALZAGHE v ROY JONES JR in 2002
    At the time...

Jones Jr was still at the height of his LHW brilliance, blasting out Glen kelly and Clinton Woods. He still hadn't lost other than a DQ 5 years before.

Calzaghe was WBO champion, got took to points by Charles Brewer, and fought Tocker Pudwill and Miguel Angel Jiminez.

AARON PRYOR v WILFRED BENITEZ in 1980
    At the time...

Pryor had just beaten Cervantes, and there wasn't too much good competition at his own weight.

Benitez had just lost to Leonard, and he like Pryor was being cut out of the Fab Four fight club.

Which of these 3 fights do you think would have done better for each guy's career? Whose resume would look better for this fight being on it? Who would've lost??

Calzaghe would have lost for sure IMO, Floyd would have won with relative ease, and the Pryor/Benitez is a toss up.

Assuming a victory in all three I'd say JC would have benefited most from his fight.
Floyd would have been upgraded a fair bit as people really thought Kostya was great (look how much credit Hatton got for beating a somewhat worn down KZ) . Benitez, though an all-time great, is not and was not in the publics mind enough to make Pryors legacy much more than it is, though personally i think it would have been an awesome win if he could have pulled it off.

problem with calzaghe is that he never had any weight on the world stage - so being reflective of his career has to lay blame at his feet.

he did it consciously so let's not give him dues he hasn't earnt (or even tried to).

floyd-tszyu wasn't that far from happening imo.

tszyu-oscar was being talked about before tszyu lost for the first time, so both tose match-ups went up in smke after that.

i never followed boxing (strangely enough) while i was involved in it - it was always just some fun and a way to keep sharp for me, so i really can't comment on the prior-benitez fight.

I feel Mayweather outpoints tszyu. I feel the fight would be all about floyd keeping a long way from tszyu's right

The real interesting match-up for Jones-Calzaghe would not have been at LHW, where clearly Jones would have been too powerful, but at SMW, where Calzaghe has always belonged. Jones, assuming he could make the weight, would likely still win, but it would have been a real battle.

i dont agree although calzaghe is a talented fighter.

calzaghe has never beaten a proven world class fighter in his prime.

it's indicative of british fighters over recent years and, until ricky hatton came along and bucked the trend, it's always been the achilles heel of most british fighters.

    its not going to happen.

tszyu lost the oscar fight on his own, and i can't see floyd losing too much sleep with tszyu.

I think Mayweather would have beaten Tszyu too, but what fight of the 3 do you think would have enhanced either man's resume more??

Calzaghe beating Roy would have been huge, not as much to other way around.

Tszyu and Mayweather had a lot to gain from each other. Thats another division Mayweather could have ruled and been the man at, with a win against one of the best to ever lace them up at 140.

Pryor beating Benitez would have been big for him but with Wilfredo only just loosing would have taken some gloss of the win.

Im to tired to make sense right now.

Could you explain your statement "problem with calzaghe is that he never had any weight on the world stage" To me that looks like a bunch of words that means nothing. He won 3 ABA titles at different weights, has been world champion 11 years, defended his title 21 times, beaten every one he has faced, fought in front of crowds in excess of 30,000 and 50,000 and travelled to the US to fight there. And yet you try and denegrate the man.The American attitude towards Calzaghe on this board is frankly embarrasing and transparent. The best fighter in the world today is British and it sticks in your throats.

Mayweather by close but not debatable decision over Tszyu.

Gotta lean towards RJJ over JC on pts but wouldnt be shocked at a Calzaghe win on pts.

Pryor by razor thin decision over Benitez but could easily be vice versa.

All great competitive matches - anyone who says different doesnt know **** IMHO (just waiting for all the JC haters to hit out with nonsense like Roy KO2 Joe, haha.)
