3 questions that i have been thinking about a lot lately

Do you think Marquez made the right decision facing Mayweather when he did?

If he did not where would he be P4P right now?

    and...

Can Marquez give Manny Pacquiao a run for his money again?

I only see 3 questions, thread title says 4? :huh

    I'll answer them anyway:

    - I understand if he did it for the money, but if he didn't need the cash he shouldn't have done it. No-one should jump 2 weight classes for a fight with a bigger, prime, top-class opponent. It's a recipe for domination

    - He would be where he is/should be: p4p#3. The Mayweather fight was a meaningless mismatch, so it has not affected his p4p standing

    - No, he cannot give Pac a serious fight now. Marquez struggles with the physicality of Juan Diaz, Pacquiao blows through bigger, better men like Cotto and Margarito. I'd still like to see the fight as it would be fireworks while it lasts, but it would end with Marquez on the canvas for sure

Juan, I, and everyone else will tell you he made the right decision because he had his career high in earnings. Honestly, it's not very debatable.

Yes he could get no bigger fight at that moment. Pac kept ignoring him since the 2nd fight and that was the bigger payday. I dont think he knew PBF would be as big as he was when he came in the ring.

He would be at where he is now 3 or 4.

YES!!! an indicator of that is the mild ducking going on from Pacs team.
First they said 147 since JMM had previously said it had to be at a catch weight so JMM agrees and says lets do it.
Second. After JMM agrees to the weight they say he is asking for far too much. They said he was asking for double what he got in the PBF fight which was a lie. He wanted 5 mil which is what Mosley is making anyways.
They also said he wouldnt sell enough. Well Did Clottey? Do you honestly think on Cinco de Mayo weekend Mosley will sell better than JMM who has arguably beaten him twice? NO

You can say all you want about Pac getting so much better. Isnt that what they said before the second fight? JMM is too old Pac is so much better. BLAH BLAH BLAH...

Same thing here. He has just fought one style of fighters and 1 punching bag. JMM beats Pac and the PBF doesnt create as much. Bob doesnt want Pac to risk it before he gets his big cashout fight since he knows PBF makes Pac look ordinary.

    1) He made the right decision. You fight to make money. End of story.

    2) He is now back where he was before that fight, P4P #3. Not that it matters to him. He has still been in big money fights after the Mayweather loss. At this stage of his career, thats all that matters.

    3) Marquez would give Pacquiao his toughest fight since their last meeting. Im 90% sure of this. He is also Pac's biggest challenge outside of Bradley or Mayweather.

    1. He took the money and actually walked away with more respect from the fans than Mayweather.

    2. He was #3 then, still is now. Age has more to do with re-evaluating his standing than anything.

    3. I will never count Marquez out. He could pull one last great performance out against Manny, or he could go out on his shield. He just wants the chance either way.

Do you think Marquez made the right decision facing Mayweather when he did?

Yes and No. If he needed the money, then fine...if he didn't, it was a terrible decision.

However, I don't believe it was about the money...it came down to him wanting to chase Pacquiao for that 3rd bout. Again should he have chosen Mayweather as his first opponent at Welterweight? Yes and No.

Mayweather was coming off of a long layoff, he was the "retired" PPV #1...was arguably still the biggest name in boxing. A win over Mayweather at that point would have clinched him the rematch he wanted. Maybe he should have tested the water at 140-147lbs first before diving in at the deep end.

But he chose to go for the high risk-high reward option.

If he did not where would he be P4P right now?

This all depends on who Mayweather's opponent would have been instead of himself...and if Marquez could have not only looked impressive against good opposition, but also without taking a loss in that time period, up until now.

Most likely P4P #3, but if Mayweather's opposition was not up to standard...

Can Marquez give Manny Pacquiao a run for his money again?

I doubt it...he gives him more to think about than Mosley though.

he will lose to manny by one point again :verysad

he took the fight to fight mayweather !!! can you blame him.every real fighter wants to the fight the best.he has fought the very best in there primes and still held his own, welll kinda.so i think he should have taken the fight if he wanted it.

he was already rank 3 p4p when he got in the ring with mayweather.mayweather was considered by that time number 2 even though i still had him at number 1 along with few other huggers.but huh if marquez would have beat mayweather you could aruge he was number 1 without even fighting manny.i would but i can see how alot would not so..id say he would be numbe 1 if he did that.

Marquez has fought the best in his weight class since JMM PAC 2 chasing a fight with another great Name pacquiao... But pac's team just wants nothing to do with JMM at the moment. He still poses a great threat to PACQUIAO.

When the 2nd fight happened it was signed because JMM was supposed to lose in devastating fashion not give a re enactment of the first fight... commentators everyone was prasing how PACQUIAO was a different fighter with a new right hand, and the same **** happened again...seeing as how JMM has fought recently there is no way they will put him in with PAC and get a part 3 re enactment of last time.

Wait for JMM to lose and pac's team will want it, I don't blame this ducking running on Pacquiao its his team, and PAC is just a puppet... when roach see's JMM is very vulnerable it will happen.

Money wise it was a good decision for the short term. If the fight had been more competitive it would have really raised his profile more with the casual fans or people who don't watch the sport regularly.

Getting blown out made it a really bad idea, because whether you're a big fan or someone who pays no attention to the sport, you want to see two guys who seem unbeatable going at each other. Unstoppable force versus immovable object, until we finally see which one gives out. Mayweather spanking Marquez takes away from that.

And from a purely boxing point of view, as Popkins said, jumping 2 weight classes to take on a top p4p fighter in his prime, especially if said fighter is faster than you, is just a bad idea.

Do you mean p4p #1? I doubt it. I think most people would have still seen Pacquiao and Floyd tied for the top spot, with Marquez third.

I kinda doubt it at 140 or anything higher than than. At 140 I think Manny has retained too much speed and explosiveness, and above that it becomes a mismatch.
