Ok. I've never boxed a day in my life and I've entered a charity event vs someone who also doesnt box. Although he is 10 years my senior....

I'm generally quite fit, I used to sprint nationally, I gym regularly, but I lack that boxing conditioning.

I've got 3 months to go from zero to (passable) hero.

What would you recommend I do training-wise?

    Any positive advice welcomed.

    Cheers

I've joined a boxing gym. My intention is to go that 'extra' mile. Weekend session plans etc...

My tip would be add in extra conditioning and progress over the next 10 weeks. Also, don't get carried away, a 1-2 combination and a tight guard worked over and over for 3 months will do you more good than to try ducking everything, Ali-shuffling, trying to be mayweather etc.

Just try not to go in and throw full power bombs with ever punch or you will be gassed in no time. Try to actually use the techniques you learn at your boxing gym. Keep your hands up, use your footwork and jab and you will win easy vs a guy who is just charging forward throwing wild.

Best thing you can do on your own is conditioning. Sprints are your best bet. Get your cardio as good as it can be. Then when he's exhausted and just throwing wide, slow, looping hooks, you will still be able to throw some quick punches right down the middle and score easily.

conditioning , if you get supremely fit and hes 10 years your senior and you get some basics down pat in sparring ( 1 ,2 ) you should be fine!

try this 2-3 times a week its from ross training, iv found huge benifits from it

    20 mins on the clock

on every second minute ie 2,4,6,8 and so on up till 20

    you do 5 chin ups
    10 med ball slams
    15 burpees
    20 star jumps

you probably finish it in 1 min 15 seconds aso you get 45 seconds rest

its a killer but will get your conditioning up cant recommend it enough

mate i would just focus on sparring and get used to being in the ring. if you don't know how to take a punch you won't last

To re-iterate what has been said above. I would advocate learning 1 or probably 2 combinations- such as a straight left and right (1-2) straight right+left hook and some sort of step away afterwards, repeating them all the time over the next few months on the heavy bag, shadow boxing and visualise yourself doing them when you are alone or have a chance.

Then when you go in the ring just rely upon these 2 moves.

  10. Definitely join a boxing gym, I wouldn't worry too much just head into the boxing heavy bag classes and they definitely get you in decent shape! Ask the trianer to get in for some sparring and pad work. If you want to work harder then i'd say go through some of your old sprint workouts, add in a few medium distance no longer than 5 k i'd say.

    Good luck mate.
