One championship per weight class. Network TV. C'mon, do we really need marathons of "The Parkers" to fill time? Put some fights on.
How about "real" non-criminal judges and ref? Plus, so many good fights are not ever shown on USTV while too many boring fights are.
More supercards would be nice... For instance Quintana-Williams on the Jones-Trinidad card, along with Golota-Mollo would make it an outstanding PPV WORTH the riduculous as all hell prices.
Ideally that's the way PPV should be. But the problem lately is the fact that huge payouts are given to the two headlining fighters so there is little left for the undercard. Truth be told, boxing is damn lucky it has die hard fans like us. Nobody else in any other sport would put up with the **** we do. Which I guess is the same reason why they take advantage of us. Dirty *******s. Also i'm not sure about the timeline but I'm pretty sure that the PPVs of the 70s are what killed boxing on network TV. When promoters saw they could get more on a single big fight than going through network sponsors they took their big shows off of network TV. Then network TV pretty much discarded the second rate boxing cards. Also the same reason why HBO has been screwing us by moving all their big fights to HBO PPV and spending less money on HBO cards.
This is true in the UK. Even boxers not of the highest level (Bruno would be my ideal example) are given hero status. The whole country gets behind a British fighter. Look at Bruno and then genuine fighters like Benn, Eubank, Hamed and now possibly Khan. Same here... The sad truth also is that the boxers themselves have to take some of the blame. Tysons behaviour especially has done a lot of damage to the image of boxing. You need good guys and bad guys in any sport but there are lines that if they are crossed do lasting damage and Tyson crossed them on more that one occassion. As a fan I've accepted that boxing isn't safe I would be foolish to deny that taking punches to the head does not have an adverse effect short or long term. However there are are more dangerous sports statistically out there. Personally I'd rather see it banned that tamed. I can think of nothing worse that watching a fight with 16oz gloves head gear and 8 - 2 minute rounds. Boxing is what it is because of the risk.
3 'simple' things that would make boxing mainstream... 1) Free television exposure. 2) Better behaviour 3) 1 champ per weight
Get rid of the ABC boys, for get network TV, they can't pay the big money for the fights and get it back. cable does a very good job and HBO have really do well for the fans in the past 4 years.
Its too dificult to get a big following on a sport that cost $45 on average to watch a major fight. Also following the sport is harder cos fighters fight 2-3* a year so fans dont get attached to fighter as easily. I know alot of people, tennis is on their face every afternoon during the season and with nothing else to watch they try it. They soon get to know the players and become fans just like that. Boxing dont offer that.
I do not think that shows like 24/7 will excite the regular person on the street because they don't actually do much. You might watch one but then you'd realise that nothing much actually happens and that you don't really care about the personalities. Reducing the glove size may result in more KOs but this might reduce the quality of the fights. The last thing we want are jab KOs like in UFC. In the UK you have to pay for Sentanta or Sky Sports to watch professional boxing (only Khan's next few fights are on terestrial TV). This hugely reduces your potential audience. I do not blame the fighters for the money they earn because like anything it is about supply/demand. I think however that due to the money they do earn they do not need to fight very frequently. If they were paid less then they'd be forced to fight a little more frequently and they'd also need to fight the best fighters because there would be no money fighting the tomato cans. For example it will be hard for the UK to get excited about Hatton fighting Rees.
1. After six rounds have a half-time spectacular. 2. A sub-plot involving some sort of love triangle with the fighters and card girl. 3. When a fighter is knocked down use the drum beat from the end of Eastenders and then go to a commercial break.
Having one Sanctioning Organization. The reason the UFC grew so quickly wasn't because of the individual fighters, its because it is very easy for "new fans" to identify with the UFC logo and the 'UFC' as a company. The problem with boxing is that the best fighters fight 2 times a year for $50 and that is all the public sees of them. How is a new fan supposed to become a fan? Casual fans are lost when they try and get involved with the sport, they don't even know where to start.
