I think a great promotion tactic would be to promote the top fighters. Show all their previous major fights on mainstream TV. Sure its not live but your average guy will tune in to watch it, recognise the fighter, see more of his previous big fights being televised and may become a fan as he attaches himself to a fighter. Most people have gotten into boxing through 1 fighter, that fighter fights other fighters to which we learn about and altogether we become interested in the sport as a whole.
1. Only one champ per division 2. although not always, at least we routinely get the meaningful fights we want 3. Lastly, big fights on free TV. I know boxing is too commercialized abd it would be farfetched but hey, our elders grew up watching Ali, Duran and several others on saturday afternoons on CBS. Sometimes there are two big fights simultaneously on two channels. And even non-superstars were given great exposure by making routine defenses on free TV. Oh how we would love to be back at those times.
Definatley should be the case that they sell dvd`s of fights. That way also it could provide an income for boxers when they retire just as an aging rockstar can sit back and pick up the royalty money. I feel the TV companies are definatley shooting themselves in the foot by keeping all that footage in the vaults. They should at least leave fight clips on youtube or set up their own youtube channel that should show their countdown 24/7 episodes as a way of advertising for upcoming fights.
