Ugh because of money. No one was stupid enough to pay just to see him fight nobodies. They took the fight because Martinez was the only big fight other than Paul Williams.

Exactly, if Pavlik fought another mandatory bum then he gets criticized but when he takes a risk and loses they say he was dumb for that, he lost and that is that.

they could have gone for someone like felix sturm.

    fought oscar in america.

i'm sure they could have worked something out for the states.

or even a decent payday for pavlik over in germany.

an easier style match than martinez.

martinez always looked a horrible style for him. :patsch

    I agree with all three.

    1. - This cost him some rounds. He was doing it in the middle rounds, but once he was cut he backed off when he needed to bring it and make Martinez exchange. Manny had it right when he said he could luck into another off balance knock down and steal another round.

    2. This probably played a huge roll in the loss. He was obviously bothered by the cuts.

    3. Mixed on this one. He and his trainer seem to have a good rapport, but are also set in a pattern. A new trainer could help him step it up a notch, and improve some fundamental mistakes, like his flat feet and lack of confidence in letting his hands go.

    4. Gain confidence and heart. After the cut Pavlik went into survival mode instead of "hell or high water" mode. THIS is what cost him the fight! He needed to go balls out. He had nothing left to lose.

On the flip side...here is what I think Pavlik did well.

    1. He's a smart fighter. He succeeded in figuring out a remedy for Martinez game plan.

    2. His punches are not pinpoint accurate, but he has a lot of control on them. He was able to stutter the jab, mid punch, and land it in a new location.

kelly is to me a plodder ,he is not a speed fighter he plods in and breaks people down....people with decent speed who give him angles and movement will beat him everytime because he doesnt know how to cut them off properly...He has gone as far as he can go with jack Leow and should consider moving on to someone else where he can hopefully learn other techniques.

Those points are similar to my notes. Martinez was a game fighter, but could have been beat if Pavlik would remember the basics. Congrats to Martinez though. Pavlik was beginning to look like a lame middleweight champ like Taylor. This will keep things interesting. I look forward to seeing if either Martinez can keep the title and defend it or Pavlik learning from his mistakes (if he's capable).

I've said this for the longest about Kelly he needs to get with a big time team. His cut man was a novice a seasoned pro could have at least reduced the bleeding. Kelly seems to be operating with amateurs in his corner. I realize he's from a small town and doesn't want to abandon the people who got him this far but this is his career and it's falling apart.

Kelly can't fight on the inside and he needs to improve this. He also needs to work on cutting the ring off better.

Agree with new corner, cutting off ring better, develop left hand, gain some head movement, and most of all quit plodding! Make him come to you a little bit.
I think he could win the rematch if he focuses and gets new help.

No ones heard from Sturm in a long time. They needed an opponent that would actually make it.

    Exactly what I've been thinking...

I thought the Pavlik camp knew something the rest of us didn't. Smaller, quicker man that moves all around the ring and a southpaw to top it off.

The worst part is that Martinez did exactly what he's done in every other fight. There was no surprises in the way he fought. They didn't even seem to have a concrete gameplan coming into the fight.
