If had the mentality of a coward which was the implication then it wouldnt matter. All those excuses sound pretty appealing when he knew he was about to get his head ripped off. Which he almost did. He couldve stayed down when Hearns dropped him in the first round. Compare that to Ray Leonard who never hurt Duran significantly in 3 fights {unless you believe Howard Cosell`s vivid imagination} Duran was in little danger of being knocked out by Leonard. In the 3rd fight you could say Duran ripped off the public but Ray Leonard didn`t exactly burn up the canvas himself. Duran still put those Hands of Stone on him enough to give him some stitches.
The 3rd fight really shouldn't of happened. Surprised just how disliked SRL is one these forums, never really liked him myself. ATG boxer, but an odious egotistcal man
I appreciated Leonard's gracefulness when Duran did what Duran does, which is toss out excuses like Elvis did scarves. It was the steak. It was the orange juice. It was the hot coffee. All of that is nonsense. I didn't appreciate the way the whole show revolved around the lesser fighter and how it allowed the lesser fighter to control the narrative. And what does that narrative do? It diminishes not only Duran's great victory, but it diminishes Duran himself. Leonard is still the star -and he is still alienating the "foreigner" with the assistance of a producer who failed to do his homework and question that silly-ass narrative. Leonard is still telling lies about how he was sucked into a macho struggle and didn't fight his fight. That nonsense was exploded three years ago and it was exploded by Dundee and Leonard's own damn words before and immediately after the fight.
The only beef I have with SRL is that throughout his career he clearly used his star power to determine when fights were going to take place, how big the ring would be, what gloves could be worn etc. Much like Floyd does today. I don't recall others with immense marketing power such as Tyson or ODH making these type of demands.
Leonard in the prime of his life lost to a midget on the downside of his career Midget eats half of New York and takes a huge payday for a fast rematch, takes tablets to lose the weights, even as a shell of a man he keeps the fight competitive I think Duran walked away just to spite Leonard Leonard never got over it He wouldn't let Leonard have the clean win like he got over Leonard
When someone rage-quits on xbox live when you are beating them You don't celebrate you get pissed they walked away before the end
Careful, Elton - you're dangerously close to discrediting your idols one and only great win here. Though I do tend to agree with you in that Hearns was a lesser fighter at 160. Elton refusing to accept reality even when reality is right in front of him, slapping him across his flabby chops.
You should try composing yourself in future, Poxy; try and refrain from positing in the heat of the moment, when you're most upset, and we may just be able to avoid the sort of nonsensical tripe that you've posted above. atsch@ the bolded.
The same year- Minter and Sal Sanchez took far smaller paydays for even quicker rematches. It's not that competitive, really. In a couple of seconds Leonard will be three rounds ahead and has all the momentum.
honestly, i thought this 30 for 30 sucked bad. there was so much wasted time talking about nothing until they met, and then still it was nothing. i love documentaries but this was probably the worst i've seen.
Never understood why so many supporters of Duran try and justify his actions in this fight. Surely as a grown man it's possible to realise you can love Duran as a fighter and rate him highly AND still accept it was a shameful act. Leonard's performance was second-rate as well though, why it's sometimes painted as a boxing masterclass is beyond me.He fought as if he was in with a heavyweight.
thats what i get for conversing with a personal trainer. as u know, personal trainers are very poorly educated and havent learned to read between the lines. I ve met ten year olds with more brains I am referring to the fact that u dont have a crystal ball otherwise u would have seen the end coming for Tommy after digging several shots to the ribs of Barkley yet u say Duran knew he was going to be knocked out and chose to quit and why do u keep referring to me as Elton? do u think it causes me embarassment? for all your efforts to do so, it only gets this results  becuz you're so damn feeble and inept seriously, run it around the block a coule of times and tell me u wouldnt get the impression you're a wuss
