30 yrs ago this May, Cooney waxed Norton at MSG. WICKED!

    Cooney pummeled a washed up Norton (who was 2 years older than his listed age) but fights like these were bad for him in the end. He should have faced some truly dangerous opponents and not the washed out 70's crew. The man did have power and the quickness and technique to deliver the punches on target, but he lacked the durability to stay the distance. When Holmes hit him in the 2nd round it was as if he had never been caught with a punch like that before and it took him by surprise.

    Norton's days as a viable contender were over by the time he put in a horrible performance against the usual gatekeeper of the era Scott LeDoux.

    Dokes was tight, but never truly developed that punching power.But having Don King in your corner sure makes a lot of short cuts.

    "Holmes-Cooney" is in my top-5 all-time favorite title fights to review... That fight was so huge back in 1982... I was foaming at the mouth for it to happen...
