Martinez vs. Vazquez

Round 1

Vazquez boxes around, throwing smooth 4 and 5 punch combos on the turn and defending will with his right glove up by his chin but eating an occasional right hand when he slows his sidelong hopping and stays in close.

10-9 Vazquez

 

Round 2

Vazquez weaving in and out effectively with hook-2 combos as he circles left. Martinez blocks high and tries to time him while turning and cutting space with big steps. Nice hooks to the body by Martinez. Vazquez catches Martinez's head between his forearms and pushes him back, setting up his own triplet of left hooks to the body.

Round 3

Double jabs from Vazquez leaning forward, then pulls back with his right glove under his chin - looking a bit like a poor man's Mayweather but shining as Martinez hurls counter-punches at him just a hair too slow to catch him. Vazquez is fighting very intelligently, dropping his hands only when out of range and throwing long bombs from this stance that land before Martinez even sees them coming; then using a combination of pick-offs with the gloves and slipping with upper body movement to avoid damage on the inside, where Bryan is still landing those good left hooks to the body. Martinez isn't bad by any stretch, just outclassed. Martinez comes forward behind a high guard and drops a right hand to the body. Now a lunging jab gets him in range as Vazquez peels out to the left on screeching tires, and Martinez tries to rain power punches on him but can't get through the defenses of the younger and more athletic man.

Round 4

Vazquez uses quick hops with both feet following close behind each other to dance Martinez into knots. Good jabs from Vazquez. Martinez tries to cut the ring off and absorb incoming fire on his forearms, but Vazquez reaches around and hooks him in the temple. Body attack by Martinez, and Vazquez uses his footwork to outmaneuver him. Nice left and right hooking shots to the body by Vazquez, all while on the move. Martinez isn't giving up, drilling his head into Vazquez's breadbasket and pounding away with powerful lefts to the body. Vazquez is too slippery to hit for long. Martinez squares up in front of him and Vazquez blasts him with 3-4 straight power punches. Martinez comes forward pumping an overhand right and drives Vazquez to the ropes but can't pin him down there. Martinez drops a right hand to the body and eats a counter left hook to the face.

Round 5

Martinez is trying to wear Vazquez down now, using relentless pressure and pumping his overhand right at mid-range and then leaning against Vazquez on the inside. Vazquez is still boxing well, but his offensive output has diminished to just a left hook to the body as he steps out of the pocket...otherwise just defending. Martinez is throwing a lot to the body inside. Vazquez telegraphs a big right hand lead and Martinez ducks under it and pins himself against Vazquez to launch some more body shots. Martinez pushes him to the ropes and smacks away at him with overhand rights. Vazquez leans away from them and blunts their impact but they are scoring partially, and he isn't throwing much back.

Round 6

Vazquez is using a lot of side-to-side movement and staying on the outside, dominating with his snappy jab thrown off his toes. Martinez is keeping his body pitched forward and his elbows high and tight together, and his feet alternating behind each other in Vazquez's direction with just slight anticipatory adjustments to try and head him off. Martinez is getting pretty close and forcing some exchanges but Vazquez is able to be first and last and get out of there. Martinez keeps trying to open up with Vazquez near the ropes but can't get off quite enough punches to do so. Vazquez is caught with some glancing overhand rights and is feeling the pressure but has gotten back to boxing well for much of the round.

Round 7

Vazquez is doubling his jab and dropping some high crosses behind it, surprising Martinez for the first minute of the round with his aggression and this new combo thrown very crisply. Martinez recovers and starts to block it and come forward again, first hooking low and then up working his way up top. Vazquez is dancing around, and hugging the ropes. Vazquez tries his 1-2 from several steps away and Martinez easily dodges it. Vazquez was just trying to get some time & space. He keeps rolling and moving as Martinez chases and hammers with his right hand. Vazquez slipping well but very few counters coming back from him. Martinez has a good moment at the end of the round with Vazquez trapped on the ropes, as left hooks and overhand rights rain down from Martinez.

Close round, probably still Vazquez despite offense in spurts.

 

Round 8

Quintuple jab by Vazquez coming forward, and then a quick step away from Martinez' counter right. Vazquez holds his right hand out behind him, spinning it around and then feints with his left jab before slicing the right arm underneath and back up for a quick right uppercut. Vazquez is really putting a lot into his shots now, shouldering his way inside and then teeing off with left hooks to the body and short hard crosses to the face. Vazquez repeats this pattern, shouldering in and landing combos off the lean-away for about thirty seconds. Vazquez then reverts to his outboxing. Martinez doesn't miss a beat, coming forward and pressuring as best he can. Double jab up high from Martinez, slow but he almost lands an unexpected hook off the jabs as he turns into Vazquez.

Round 9

Vazquez landing big shots, getting the San Jose faithful all worked up. Martinez is holding up well, though. Vazquez is hooking him from mid-range, getting off combos and stepping back while still landing. More shouldering in from Vazquez but Martinez is tying up his arms before he can do much work. Martinez pinning his arms on the inside and trying to give him a little smack on the mouth. Martinez is scrappy. Vazquez keeps pushing off and then catching Martinez lurching into him and starting the process all over again. Vazquez slaps with both gloves, landing his palms and the inside curves of his gloves where the knuckles bend repeatedly against the sides of Martinez's head as the latter ducks down and tries to press into him. Martinez is one tough dude, coming forward and getting eaten alive on the inside as much as he was outside in previous rounds.

 

WTH? It's over, apparently. Just after the bell to end the 9th Vazquez starts running around celebrating, before pausing to exchange a nod and glove-tap with Martinez.

It must have been a corner stoppage. :think

 

No, it wasn't a retirement or TKO...it was a nine round match. :?

The scores are being read...pretty much all in the "ochenta" range (eighties).

Yeah. 9 rounder.

Vazquez of course wins a unanimous decision. Sounds like all three cards were along the lines of 89-82 or 90-81. Last time they met, he had beaten the tough old Nicaraguan by scores of 77-75 and 79-73 twice.

 

Bryan "El Tiquito" Vazquez is a pretty good looking young prospect, to be honest.

He improves to 23-0 (11).

I'd like to see him mix it up with more international competition on the road.

 

They're showing a different female boxing match before Gabriel-Perez II; Dominican top-10 featherweight Dahiana Santana against 37 year old New York shortie Stacey "Stay-Lo" Reile. The height difference is listed as an inch and a half but looks like a little more.

Most of the first round elapsed during a quick urination trip! :twisted: Damn these 2 minute sessions they have for girls.

In the second, Reile does a lot of windmilling but the cleaner work is done off the backfoot by the taller Santana who just punches down at her with right hands and cuffing hooks behind the neck.

Reile's corner is yelling at her and cussing up a storm, telling her to avoid the "****ing right hand" and take advantage of the fact that Santana drops her ****ing hand after throwing. Ah, New Yorkers. :yep

 

Reile still slugging her way in, but Santana lands the best stuff of the 3rd to the body and then ties Reile up, pushing down on the back of her head. Ugly round.

This is for the vacant IBF featherweight title, btw (female version).

Santana looks well on her way to claiming it if she doesn't get kayoed. She's never been knocked out in 32 fights (retired once, six years ago).

Reile's corner is telling her she's doing beautifully.
