Solo Boxeo Tecate: Jesse Vargas vs. Vivian Harris RBR

This is strictly so that people who couldn't see the fights can at least have a write-up to go by.

First fight:

Eddie Gomez vs. Roberto Lopez, 6 rounds @ light middleweight

 

Round 1

Gomez is taller, leaner, and looks to be the much sharper boxer in the early going. He's winning the first half of the round almost exclusively with the left hand. Jabs and hooks landing well. Lopez is moving his arms up and down, trying to defend but also be in position to throw punches with power. Whenever his hands come down he gets hooked in the face. Gomez also dropping right hand bombs to just in front of Lopez's kidney. Gomez double jabs Lopez in the face and then hooks him at the bell.

Crystal clear so far.

Round 2

Gomez jabs easily while dancing around, drops his left after he lands and sticks his tongue out. A bit early for showboating, although he has looked dominant. Lopez hurt by a left hook to the face! Gomez keeps plastering him with short punches and pushing him into the ropes. Lopez is getting tagged but not going down. Lopez jabs up high and tries to drill a right hand through to the body. Gomez just stands in front of him and lands hard with a right hand and left hook to the body. Sweeping left hook upstairs, too. Gomez tags him with a nasty overhand right to the nose. Brutal left hook to the body. Right hand to the navel, and some more hard ripping lefts to the face. Damn, Lopez is getting worked. Big combo stepping forward by Gomez. He puts his punches together very nicely. Lopez is getting bombed out, and Gomez looks cool as a cuke while doing it. Very smooth style, and he's slipping the few punches Lopez is flicking out in between all his attacks. Big uppercut under the chin at the bell by Gomez.

Round 3

Lopez ineffectively paws with his jab. Gomez hooks him low. Gomez jabs high. Gomez backs away and turns his stance from side to side, turning one shoulder in toward Lopez and then the other. Lopez walks into left hooks to the body and right hands to the face that knock him off balance. Lopez comes wading forward and suddenly slams Gomez with some hard underhand body shots. Gomez gets out to the middle of the ring and starts to pick Lopez off with hooks while easily slipping everything Lopez throws coming forward. Left hook/right uppercut combo by Gomez as he glides right past Lopez. Gomez leads Lopez around the ring, ducking and dodging wild right hands. Lopez is just lunging with full power. Gomez ducks off to his right very quickly, leaving Lopez double-jabbing at air. Gomez backs away from several short jabs and hooks Lopez in the temple. Lopez chasing. Gomez countering well, just pacing side to side in short bursts. Nice uppercut by Gomez.

Round 4

Gomez slips some jabs and smacks Lopez across the face with a left hook. The crowd gets restless from the monotony. Gomez shoeshines while circling closely past Lopez. Left hook to the thigh by Gomez. Lopez lunges with right hands, looking very slow and clunky next to Gomez. They tie up for one of the first times. Big left hook by Gomez sends Lopez off balance and leaning against the middle rope. He quickly gets up with no KD called. Gomez is landing uppercuts to the face on the inside before springing backward. Lopez lands a jab as Gomez stands in too long. Lopez works both hands, throwing hard honest shots but just lacking the class to touch Gomez.

Round 5

Lopez leads with an overhand right and then digs in two left hooks to the body while leaving his right glove pushed into Gomez's face. Lopez is laying on very thick pressure. Lopez doing all the punching. Gomez is warned for constantly diving in and grabbing. The crowd echoes the ref's sentiments by booing. Gomez throws a hard left hook to the body inside. Lopez lands a few jabs as Gomez keeps his hands low and just lets Lopez reach him. Gomez is walked to the ropes and tries to leap forward with an uppercut but falls just a few inches short. Lopez is keeping his jab going nonstop to set up his attacks. Lopez's feet are a bit clumsy but he doesn't cease his pursuit, keeping Gomez leaning and moving away. Lopez lands an overhand right across the back as Gomez ducks. Lopez keeps jabbing.

Round 6

Three hard hooks by Gomez. Lopez double jabs but isn't accurate or sharp enough to hold Gomez still with them. Gomez effortlessly backs away with his hands down, as Lopez lungs with jabs and rights that miss Gomez's face by a hair. Gomez just grins. Gomez landing hooks and swatting away Lopez's jabs. Gomez laughing. Gomez lands an overhand right. BIG low blow by Gomez, a left hook right to the nuts but unseen by the referee. Left hook downstairs again, this one legal. Lopez keeps jabbing his way in, determined. Gomez reaches out and shoves him back to get off the ropes. Gomez slips on the outside, and throws a couple of lazy overhand rights. Gomez seems to be done working for the evening, feeling he's done enough. Gomez slides his feet forward and to the left, slapping Lopez in the face with a hook.

Floyd Money Mayweather is sitting at ringside, with headphones in his ears and sporting a curious shirt with what looks like abstract art - a bright green background with random streaks of pink. And of course a shiny metallic chain around his throat. Flashy and flamboyant!

 

Harris gets rudely booed during the introduction. He just shrugs and snaps his elbows, getting loose.

Vargas does a little posing for the crowd during his introduction, putting on his game face and then loading up and throwing a superman punch into the air.

 

Round 1

Vargas throws a right hand . Vargas coming in aggressively, working Harris into the ropes. Harris blocking most of these hard shots. They wrestle, Harris first pushing his way off the ropes and Vargas then pushing him back. Vargas lands hooks to the body. Harris keeps pushing until he gets Vargas against the opposite set of ropes. Harris is working quick little body shots in the middle, just above Vargas' belt. Vargas keeps throwing his hooking body shots to the flanks. Harris keeps grinding Vargas into different sets of ropes, peppering him with short body shots while taking big ones to his own sides. Joe Cortez calls for a break and Vargas hooks his way in high and low. Harris clinches and throws a short uppercut to the chest before Cortez calls a break. Big combo by Vargas has Harris stunned and pitching forward to hold. Vargas is holding Harris up! No knockdown called by Cortez!! Vargas throwing lots of hooks! They wrestle to the ropes. Big 1-2 by Vargas knocks Harris back into the ropes. Harris bounces his butt off of them as the bell rings and runs to his corner.

Joe Cortez walks over to Vivian Harris in the corner and asks if he wants to continue. Harris just candidly shakes "no".
