[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] 305,000 buy Hopkins-Wright! HBOPPV today reported 305,000 PPV buys and $15.3 million of PPV revenue for the July 21 Bernard Hopkins-Winky Wright light heavyweight fight. That figure represents the second-highest total this year for a PPV fight, behind only De La Hoya-Mayweather. "We are pleased with the PPV performance of Hopkins-Wright," said Mark Taffet of HBOPPV. "It performed well within the range of expectations. Most importantly, following Barrera-Marquez, De La Hoya-Mayweather and Cotto-Judah, the Hopkins-Wright fight continues the string of high profile boxing events which have resulted in HBOPPV being on a record-setting pace for 2007 amidst what has been a great resurgence for the sport of boxing as evidenced by the fights which have taken place or are scheduled to take place both live on HBO and on HBOPPV this year." I thought it would be a bit more. Although there was VERY LITTTLE Hype and promotion aside from the 24/7 bit. But Hop and Wink are big names, even though considerably boring. I thought the fight was good though...nothing special or too exciting but the fight showed a lot of skill and tatical offense and Defense.
Personally, I thought the main event was a decent scrap. Some may beg to differ and I'm not going to argue-to each his own. But I think almost everybody would agree that the undercard was pretty great.
Ever been to a flea market or a garage sale? People buy the most incredible junk.Go on E Bay and see the utter crap that folks are bidding on.I guess if you put something on sale , no matter how pathetically worthless it is, it will be bought.
But what does that have to do with watching two ATG's fighting in the same ring with a tremendous undercard? It was a bit pricy and the two fighters were not known to be "FAN FREIDNLY" but as true boxing fans, you appreciate the skill and tactical fight plans by two great Boxers. You can't appreciate the "Sweet science" if you don't know what you are looking at. Anyone can appreciate "BLOOD AND GUTS" but to understand the true essence of boxing you have to know and apprecaite the skill first and foremost
Ironic, and very true. Cotto/Judah was a fight that many predicted would end with a knockout. Very few people thought that Hopkins/Wright would feature a stoppage. The fact that Hop/Winky got more buys is surprising to me, but encouraging. Looks like people were willing to pay to see a couple of pound for pound guys mix it up, even if it wasn't expected to be a blood bath.
meh, i still found the fight exciting in a few dirty kind of way. sure there was alot of holding, but it was peppered thoughout with a few good exchanges and punches landed here and there. enough to make it interesting. the worst part about the fight were the scorecards.
:happy On top of that, the undercard was phenominal. And the fight was pretty good. Still cant understand why people are bashing it so badly.
