I disagree, bud. The last guy Mitchell fought Maduma was arguably better than him and he was far from world class. I mean Maduma was a 6 round fighter who shouldn't have been anywhere near a World title eliminator and he still looked a level above Mitchell for most of the fight. Both Mickey Bey and Omar Figueroa beat Mitchell comfortably IMHO. Good luck to him though. As for the card I hope Sky show the Lee Markham fight. I think "Banjo" could be the dark horse of the division and might surprise a few people and pick up a strap before any of the other touted Super-middleweights. Very underrated fighter.
I think that is a bit harsh on Maduma mate, I mean he had been in 12 and 10 rounders for the four fights prior to Mitchell. Although yes, Mitchell got dominated for the first what 7/8 rounds?! There was an odd atmosphere up in the cheap seats where I was sat. Almost the shock that Mitchell was getting it handed to him by a relative nobody. I think we will get a real insight into how he will deal with Figueroa after he fights Estrada, see if Mitchell can dominate and stop him in the same fashion.
I actually got my tickets through Mitchell and were sat with his fans (by the half way line, first 1-5 rows back) it was odd there as well - we were obviously cheering him on but Maduma didn't allow him to get going - glad he managed to drill him with that left hook though.
I was at fight it was a disgraceful stoppage, yes guy had been twice and was hurt, but Mitchell was in corner at our side of ring and there was only a couple of seconds left of round, so he should have been gave the minute gap to see how he was as it was still a world title eliminator for him and he was well in front at the time.
It's not really harsh, Sammy. I mean Maduma hadn't been in with anybody of any quality whatsoever prior to Mitchell, so he could get away with doing a 10-12 rounder at his own pace, but it was a different story when he moved up a level....Maduma was nothing special. He was quite fast and threw some 3 punch bursts all though he never had much power and he was a 6 round fighter really. Mitchell actually made Maduma look better than he was as Kev was basically gun shy in the first 5-6 rounds and just backed off and threw the odd jab because he was terrified of getting hit by Madumas left hook. But Maduma tired badly after 6 rounds and he nearly even went in the 5th round when Mitchell clipped him, so I don't rate his ability to take a good shot either. After six rounds Mitchell stood his ground as he had no respect for Maduma's speed or power any longer.
An understatement mate. The first card of the year and Sky Boxing is becoming as bad as Boxnation. atsch
'Gun shy'? '...no respect for Maduma's speed or power'? I don't think you are reading this fight correctly. Mitchell was fighting to a plan and not engaging in the first half, then he stepped things up in the latter half as Maduma began to fade. These are sound tactics to use against a muscle bound, powerful, but relatively inexperienced fighter. Mitchell did well IMO.
Christ, I forgot I was called Sammy on here..... and Boxrec, drunken mistakes have come back to haunt me. Whilst harsh may be the wrong word, I still thought prior to the card that he could be the guy to upset the home favourites and was perhaps underestimated by many. And he can't have been too bad to be involved in an IBF final eliminator
Mitchell looked like he didn't know what to do early on because of Maduma's speed and style. He looked completely lost in the first half of the fight. Mitchell only found success when Maduma's tank emptied. Fair play to Mitchell, but Maduma fell apart more than anything IMO.
Ref didn't know how long was left to be fair. And Maduma was looking dangerously drained. We've all seen disasters when fighters get knocked out in that condition.
