Not much really needs to be said. 1a vs 1b, an era defining matchup to determine who would be the face of boxing, the undisputed WW king, the most important match of that decade imo.
Yup...good call. Thought about that yesterday. It kinda got lost in the Mayweather-Maidana shuffle from the weekend. Sep 16, 1981...Great fight between two great champions. What's remains great in its own right is the fact that SRL and the Hitman still have tremendous respect for each other. Always like seeing that.
Funny how that didn't turn out the same way with Marvin and Ray. I'm guessing they still have bitter feelings towards one another (More so Marvin ofc) :deal
Yeah...sad, bruh. I don't think Marvin's ever going to get over that defeat. SRL said that he would like to do something to the effect of what he and Duran did for ESPN's 30-for-30 "No Mas" segment, but with Hagler. Don't think Hagler would go for it at all. Would be interesting, but unpredictable if something is said with the slightest bit of disrespect toward Marvin. Come to think of it, that would be some damn good viewing...
Indeed it would Ray said in 2012 about hosting some Fabulous 4 concert, he also said all 4 wanted to do it. Not sure if that was just rumours. :deal But not everything can be a happy ending. I guess what makes the Fab 4 so great was because there was so much between them, not just mutual respect, but hate as well.
Both SRL and Duran are a bit of an enigma for me. When SRL fought Duran the 1st time he was shocked at Duran's behavior and realized that as far as Duran was concerned a boxing match was pretty much the same a street fight, you went to war with your opponent and you were expected to fight. After the fight Duran refused to shake hands with him. At the beginning of the fight, Leonard was surprised that Duran had the crowd on his side, partly due to the style of fighter he was and partly due to the fact that when he worked out he wore a t-shirt that said "bonjour" But SRL got his revenge by getting a rematch when he knew that Duran wasn't going to in the same shape as he was in the first fight and deciding not to go to war with Duran but to move and escape. Then when he knew he had control of the match, he starts taunting Duran in the ring and embarrassing him. (even though on the cards the fight was close). Hence the frustrated Duran decided he didn't want to fight with this clown anymore, which got translated into No mas. (makes for a better sound bit if you're Cosell) Fast forward to Moore and when Duran won, the fans started signing happy birthday to him, including Leonard, it moved Duran to tears and he asked Leonard how his wife and son were. So they had an interesting history. Certainly of the four I give SRL the most props and had he fought another 40-50 fights I'd likely rank him over Duran (depending on how he did of course) but he really didn't fight many fights to get the ATG ranking he has, so that tells you a lot about the level of talent he had.
Too bad Floyd scared as F UCK of Pacquaio!!!! WON"T FIGHT HIM!!!!! WTF???? That's what I've been ssayin!!! TIME TO RETIRE LIKE A *****!!!!!
