Contreras looks like he isn't here to lay down. He's got some swagger and isn't losing the staredown by any means.

The tale of the tape would seem to back up some of that swagger. He's four years younger and has an inch of height and two inches of reach on Ornelas.

 

Round 1

Ornelas hacks in with his jab, and Contreras floats around the outside. Ornelas has more success banging inside with hooks and right hands up top, which back Contreras up without any counters coming back. When Ornelas jabs, Contreras just jabs over it and lands first. Ornelas' power is getting to Contreras a bit though. Contreras is looking to clinch as he takes a few hard hooks and looping rights that rattle his skull. Ornelas is still guiding himself inside with his jab but not worrying about landing it - just setting up his power. Contreras is pushed into a corner once more and clubbed across the side of the head. Good combo by Contreras to get out of the trap, but he took some damage.

Round 2

Knockdown!! Ornelas landed a sweet hook. He waits patiently in the corner for Contreras to get up, coiled like a hungry snake. Contreras isn't ready to get stopped, though. Good fall-in uppercuts landing for Contreras as he leans in and smothers Ornelas before the fire can spread. Ornelas starts working the body, putting HARD shoveling right hands and left hooks into Contreras down low. Contreras bravely flurries back from off the ropes but Ornelas is starting to land that left hook on the chin again. Contreras wisely reckons that discretion is the better part of valor. Ornelas is leading with the hook now, chasing Contreras back to the ropes. Hook and right land for Ornelas, and Contreras leans forward into him. They trade vicious punches in one vicious combination after another, doing clean and rapid work without getting ensnared in the crossfire. Excellent body punches by both, but Ornelas in particular.

I think Enrique has a tougher opponent than his brother tonight.

 

Round 3

Ornelas pressures, leading with heavy uppercuts and murderous left hooks. Contreras is trying to box off the back foot, and is actually landing a multitude of rangy jabs. Ornelas keeps getting to him, and whenever Contreras parks his butt on the ropes he gets lambasted downstairs. Ornelas eats a few more jabs and other counters while working his way in, but has a big appetite tonight. All Contreras can do when Ornelas gets into body-slayer mode is lean back against the ropes and try to slip what he can, and then grab and hold until the referee calls for a break. VICIOUS left hooks by Ornelas, landing flush on the chin and forcing Contreras to hang on as his feet kick up involuntarily off the mat.

Great fight.

30-26 Ornelas

 

Round 4

Contreras hops on his toes, getting the blood flowing while he waits for the advance of Ornelas. Now Contreras boxes nicely on the outside, circling left and throwing long stiff jabs. Ornelas takes a quick lunging step forward and lands his own jab, snapping Contreras' head back. Ornelas flurries in and gets grabbed and pulled in as Contreras backs into the ropes. They wrestle a bit before getting broken up. Contreras tries to get his jab working, and uses some shimmying Gumby moves on the outside as he dares Ornelas to make it a missile contest rather than a melee. Ornelas states his preference by bashing his way inside and CLOBBERING Contreras against the ropes. Big heart and chin showed by Contreras here. Ornelas has landed some brutal head shots, and has been softening up the body even more ferociously all night. Contreras makes it through another one.
