First up - James Parison vs. Paul Mendez

6 rounds @ middleweight.

 

Mendez is four inches taller according to the tale of the tape, and it looks like even more.

Round 1

Parison is flinging up jabs and very wild rights at Mendez and mostly catching the inside of his arms as they come down like pinball paddles to keep him out. Parison flurries his way in and hugs the torso of Mendez, driving him back with his momentum and thrusting his shoulder into his abdomen. Parison is getting jabbed in the forehead from range when they break. Mendez is caught with one of those wild rights but is mostly able to nullify Parison's wild attacks on the way in, and then waits out the clinches until he can work the jab from outside again on the break.

"Prince" Eloy Perez is a real talent, and "Sugar" Dan Jimenez is a solid fringe contender who is a bit of a step up for the unbeaten super featherweight.

 

Round 2

Parison is aggressive but wild, throwing long wide-out hooks with either arm and backing Mendez up. The jab isn't there for Mendez this round. Parison is able to swing his arms around and pull Mendez into the vortex, and then land several rabbit punches and baby seal killers. It's a constant push and pull as Parison repeatedly smashes his way in and then roughhouses Mendez into ropes before getting split apart. Finally Mendez breaks up a clinch without assistance by flurrying hard once he decides he's sick of getting mauled on the inside, and lands a good hook to the ear around Parison's glove. Unfortunately for Mendez, this came with about ten seconds left in the round.

Round 3

Parison is shooting out a high jab and chasing Mendez around the ring with it. not even needing to snap it out to full extension to do so. Mendez flits from one set of ropes to the next before trying to rush past Parison and getting caught with a wild left hook arcing up into his face. They tie up and Parison gets in some good body shots and an uppercut to the chin. Parison keeps pumping the up-jab above his shoulder. Mendez is getting walked down without anything coming back. A few wild uppercuts falling into clinches are all Mendez offers as the round dwindles down.

Round 4

Huge left hook landed up high by Parison leaping forward. Mendez tries to rocket his jab into Parison's face but keeps missing him by a hair as Parison Tigger-hops around laterally. Mendez keeps trying for straight shots, attempting to line up a 1-2 but finding Parison just able to get out of its way. Mendez can't seem to land on target in time when he throws from outside, and on the inside he doesn't know how to shorten up his punches and just gets stuck in the launch tube. Parison keeps peppering away between hops.

Round 5

Both have to be sent to their corners by a stern wag of the third man's finger as they are each overeager to begin the round before the bell has sounded. Parison finds his straight shot, a good right cross that leaves Parison's face turned down to his feet. Parison keeps trying to swarm forward but is less than fully coordinated having not taken a moment to recover and clear his head. Mendez is now moving his hands busily with elbows bent and tucked by his sides, swatting away Parison's shots and taking steps back to keep him in line for jabs and rights. Parison senses the shift in momentum and isn't having it - jumping inside to grab Mendez and muscle him around, and then bang the body as he tosses him away. Continuous body attack by Parison. Powerful up-jab shatters the loose guard of Mendez. Parison now gets backed up by a 1-2 and keeps hooking at the body as Mendez runs into him and presses him back to the ropes, Parison's face firmly embedded in what would be Mr. Mendez's cleavage if he were Ms. Mendez.

Toughest round to score yet.

Swinging it Mendez's way would mean a draw was hanging in the balance entering the 6th...

 

Round 6

Parison throws high jabs to get inside and then loops away to the body. Mendez is just loading up on two shots at a time - always a jab and a cross - and most of them are sliding across the shorter and forward-leaning Parison's back. NICE uppercut by Parison. Combo to the body and a whipping overhand shot upstairs to finish it off by Parison. Mendez tries a 1-2 as Parison runs around him and is left wide open for a HUGE counter right hand, thrown off balance but landing flush and hard. Sweat flies off Mendez's face as Parison lands power punches thrown just on top of the 1-2. Uppercut to the chin lands hard for Parison. Straight right to the body. Nice action until the final bell, both trading big shots but neither scoring too well.
