First up is ladies' boxing.

6-0 Alys Sanchez vs. 1-0 Abigail Ramos

 

Alright, on to the muchachos.

WBA light welterweight trinket on the line between Elvin Perez & Nelson Lara.

 

Round 1

Lara is popping out a steady jab, trying to roll through with a right hand behind it but held off by Perez's left jab of about equal speed and snap. Perez starts to throw a few more right hands, soaring a bit high and wide and missing but backing Lara up. Lara dives in with his own overhands but is quick to back out of the pocket as Perez counters in short combination. Lara comes forward with a piercing jab but Perez quickly hops back, lands briefly on his toes and then jumps back again after alighting before Lara can scoot forward with another thrusting jab.

Round 2

Perez doubles a jab while circling, just pawing at the air. Lara turns and stuffs a jab in his face. Soft right from Lara crashes into Perez's upper arms and chest. Lara is the aggressor, pushing out with body jabs on a slight declining ramp. Perez is using his feet to get out of range and draw Lara onto his jabs, mixing in a few long hooks to the body as well. They're pretty evenly matched in just about everything but foot speed and agility, where Perez is just a little less slow and surer of his moves. Perez is jabbing and hooking at the body while staying outside and circling. Lara slices in with his own left and right sickles to the body, but can't put more than a connection or two together. Perez starts to warm up his 1-2 in the final minute.

Round 3

Perez is working double jabs and double hooks while moving to his left. In and out movement by Perez now, braving hooks to the body and heavily loaded right hands upstairs. Lara swats with his own overhand rights coming forward. Perez trades and moves. Lara fires bunches behind his comet-tail right hand. Perez is catching most of his shots on the arms and flipping a few back his way on the move.

30-27 Perez

 

Round 4

Perez sweeps in an arc to his left, then to his right. Perez waves out a jab as he goes either way. Perez puts out a hook and/or slam-down right at the feather-tips of the wings he's walking into the canvas. Lara is ducking and rolling side to side covered up and looking to blast out shots from behind his guard, playing peekaboo. Perez is putting left hooks and right uppercuts together, landing more sharply and getting Lara to cover more and throw less. Headbutt.

40-36 Perez

 

Round 5

Perez is slapping out with some hard whip-around combos from the sides. Lara weathers the early storm and then spins Perez to the ropes with a guiding hand on his ribs and then starts to unload his own shots. The referee interrupts him and deducts a point - for headbutts? :huh Didn't see one. Lara really digs in, putting Perez back on the ropes with a sequence of wide left and right uppercuts, elbows jutting out and fists slinging up hard. Perez saves himself and buys some time with a low blow. Lara comes back but can't regain his position of attack as Perez has found a straight right hand to hold him off. Lara tries to bash his way in with a high left hook, his mouth pursed in a set expression of quiet fury. Perez sends him back across the ring with a big right hand, and digs another to the body. Slapping left hook to the hip by Perez. They press forearms together and Perez shoves Lara back. Another hook to the hip by Perez. Lara pops a jab and then just misses an overhand right while backing up.

9-9 (Lara round but lost a point)

49-45 Perez

It was the first round I saw for Lara, but it was only scantly in his favor IMO. Someone could have easily given it 10-8 to Perez, which would effectively leave Lara out of this one altogether.

 

Round 6

Perez steps out in crescents to either side, and then reverts to forward and backward when bored. Perez is putting up a jab and some rights that are too high and pushed to do anything but make Lara cautious. Lara is trying to duck in and work the body, while Perez tosses out lashes over his head and back. Right hand straightened out by Perez, lands on the face of Lara. Rips to the body by Lara.
