Mario Armando Ramos vs. Arnulfo Becerra, Jr., 6 rounds @ lightweight

 

Ramos has a perfect streak going, 7-0 (7). Becerra is 7-1 (5).

 

Round 1

Becerra is trying to dive in beneath the long southpaw jab of Ramos. Cagey first minute, both circling tentatively and putting up a high number of jabs, taking a few exploratory lobs with their rear hands, thudding into each other's chests or missing. Long right jabs by Ramos darting in and out. Nice 1-2 by Ramos, "very sharp" as Kelly says. Becerra gets in a single overhand right on the bottom of the jaw in between about 7 flush straight punches from Ramos as they scrap against the ropes. Left uppercut on the belt line from Ramos, dancing his way outside to get full extension on his southpaw 1-2. Becerra wades in close, eating a couple of jabs and grazes with a left hook. 1-2 from Ramos, and Becerra gets in an overhand right. Ramos controlling with the jab on the outside as the pace settles again.

Round 2

Becerra catches Ramos with a right hand and left hook when he drifts in too close, stunning Ramos. On the outside, Ramos is able to reassert himself with the long jab and set up some nice straight combos, landing on the temples and between the eyes. Becerra has a laceration on the bridge of his nose. Becerra is slashing in with big wide right hands and missing. Ramos catching him and shoving him off, and working left uppercuts behind the right jab. Ramos now leads with the left uppercut and chops with a right hook from outside. Becerra dives in with a right on the body. Ramos is fencing with Becerra, his right jab versus Becerra's lead right, their arms spinning around each other. BIG left upper-hook by Becerra just before the bell.

Fischer had Becerra just narrowly edging the second, and has it 19-19.

 

Round 3

Becerra is doubling up on the left hook, low and high, diving face-first with the starting punch landed with his face beside Ramos' waist and then straightening up while turning over the follow-up. Ramos is prancing around the perimeter, just tickling Becerra with the right jab, saving all the stiffness for his power shots. Ramos is getting dragged into a brawl inside with Becerra, missing right hooks. Becerra landing on the body and clapping up top with some right hands. Becerra walking Ramos down and pressuring, making Ramos duck a right hand and then cracking a left hook into the side of his head while it's lowered.

Kelly and Fischer both gave Becerra round 3, with the former now having it 29-29 Ramos (he gave the second round even, 10-19) and Fischer 29-28 Becerra.

 

Round 4

Becerra is plugging away up top with the right hand, sometimes brushing the cut left cheekbone of Ramos, and sometimes missing but forcing Ramos to duck into a clinch. Becerra pressuring and whacking the body. The doctor pauses the fight to escort Ramos across the ring apron to have the physician look at the cut. Time in. Becerra is slamming down with big right hands over the top and Ramos is goaded into a prolonged war in the phonebooth, throwing big right hooks. Becerra is easing off to the right of Ramos right jab and sending right hands down the pipe, clipping Ramos repeatedly. Right hand left hook combo by Becerra.

Round 5

Becerra is walking Ramos onto right hands, avoiding his jab, cutting in close and slapping the body. Ramos is landing some quick right jabs and then dropping a left against the abraded nose of Becerra. Ramos landing more head shots, in cleaner and more eye-catching fashion, but the ring general is definitely Becerra, and this is his brand of fight. Plenty of body shots from Becerra. Close toss-up round heading into the final 20 seconds, and Ramos surges with a bunch of quick straight punches while jumping around Becerra within his orbit.
