Brian Ceballo vs. Randy Fuentes, 6 rounds @ welterweight

 

Round 1

Ceballo is controlling the distance, taking command in the center of the ring and tying up Fuentes when he tries rushing in behind the lancing right jab (Ceballo had mentioned that Fuentes would be his first southpaw faced professionally and he took care to prepare for the stance in camp). Quick slapping rights by Ceballo pin Fuentes' left glove to his temple, leaving him down one glove defensively while Ceballo lines up lead right hands and 1-2s down the middle. Fuentes is stalking, looking to load up on a heavy chopping overhand left after pumping his way in with the right jab. Ceballo doing a good job circling and countering.

Round 2

Ceballo is carrying his left arm low, elbow resting against the hip joint and bent with his wrist floating out a few inches from his crotch, ready to quickly backhand it up into a defensive position to swat away Fuentes' shots like a windshield-wiper. Ceballo is throwing more lead rights than jabs to set up his offense, daring to now and then open up with a hooking combo when he gets the jump on Fuentes and starts turning him in the pocket. Ceballo has quicker feet and hands but is still cautious - and this proves well justified, as Fuentes tags him with a well-timed heavy axing counter left just as Ceballo is ducking in to land a pair of light body shots.

Round 3

Ceballo is arrogantly wading in with his left arm low, zinging Fuentes with the occasional lead right but also missing a tad low and bouncing a few off his lead right shoulder. Fuentes is checking many of the soft pawing left jab of Ceballo across his right arm, held up and turned horizontally, and then hooking off the parry. BIG counter right hook by Fuentes. Ceballo now stepping gingerly around Fuentes, cautious. A few light pot shots by Ceballo, and lots of tying up on the inside. Fuentes wrenching his arms, rag-dolling him a little bit, imposing his physicality and getting off with some body shots, dirty-boxing. Huge chopping left by Fuentes at the bell.

Round 4

Ceballo is roping out left jabs off the hip and telegraphed arrow-nocked-on-a-longbow right crosses, most of them pattering against the gloves of Fuentes, who keeps his straightened right forearm out to shield himself and crab-walks in on Ceballo, rolling away his shots with deflecting jabs and then slamming down with the left. Some nice body shots exchanged both ways at mid-range. Fuentes blocks a straight flurry and lands a left. One more shoeshine by Ceballo, blocked.

Round 5

Ceballo is coming forward, letting a flood of light straight poking blows descend upon Fuentes after hoisting each glove up against his torso. Fuentes is pinching his palms together over his nose to catch leather, and feinting with the right jab, lulling Ceballo while backpedaling into the ropes. Fuentes plants his feet and starts to let rip with a big looping right, and scores it twice in a row - the first one grazing, the second flush...and KNOCKS CEBALLO HARD ON HIS ASS! Just over a minute left. Ceballo ties up and blinks away the fuzziness. Light flurries punctuated by grabs from Ceballo, shutting down any thoughts of finishing on Fuentes' part.

Round 6

Ceballo is doing his best Chris Eubank Jr. imitation, standing in front of Fuentes, shimmying from side to side with both arms carried low, pecking at him from different angles from one moment into the next with bullwhip jabs drawn up from the hip and right hands plunked in from a resting position above his rear pectoral. Fuentes might have spent his wad in the fifth, as he now seems to have just enough in his tank for blocking most (but not all) of Ceballo's kneadings. Ceballo the one coming forward down the stretch, as Fuentes picks off what he can and tries finding one more big counter, which never comes.

Cynthia Conte interviews Ceballo in the ring. She asks why his team picked a tough, game, and upset-minded southpaw at this juncture of his development (Fuentes upset a 17-1 favorite in his last bout) when he never had fought a single lefty before. He says this was intentional, and they believed Fuentes would be a challenging yet beatable learning experience that would prove invaluable down the road, since a lot of young up & comers in his weight range happen to be southpaws and he wants to have experience overcoming them when he steps up in opponent quality. He gives Fuentes props for coming to win and says the knockdown shot didn't really feel any different from taking any other punch, in the head of the moment it all happens so fast you barely register it and then you have no time for dwelling on it, you just have to get back to work. He says his coach has actually been working on getting rid of that hands down & chin up habit of his, and he will keep at it.
